The course prerequisites are Math 103 (di↵erential calculus of single variable functions) and Math 203
(mostly, integral techniques, power series expansions, separable and linear first order ODEs, basic vector
algebra and analytic geometry).

The course comprises a total of 24 lectures and 22 tutorials. Each lecture has a corresponding tutorial,
except for the last two lectures. There will be no tutorial sessions on the first week.

Course material can be downloaded from GUC content management system (CMS) found at
https://cms.guc.edu.eg.

You are invited to participate actively on CMS in your learning of the course material. Ask the instructors
questions, read discussions and rate the course content.

Course Objectives
The course consists of three sequences: multivariable calculus, vector calculus and di↵erential equations. Roughly
speaking, both calculus sequences are related but are rather independent of the di↵erential equations sequence.

The objectives for each sequence are stated as follows:

1 Multivariable Calculus
Introduce and study di↵erential and integral calculus of real functions of several variables

Study some important and useful engineering applications

2 Vector Calculus
Introduce and study di↵erential and integral calculus of vector functions of real or several
variables
Study some important and useful engineering applications

3 Di↵erential Equations
Introduce and study methods of solving second order linear di↵erential equations together with
some engineering applications.
Introduce and study Laplace transform and its important applications in solving di↵erential and
integral equations.
Introduce and study Fourier series and its important applications in solving linear partial
di↵erential equations.

Course Assessment Methods

1 Assignments: 10% weight
There will be 4 in-class assignments (5%) during teaching weeks: 3, 5, 8, and 10
There will be 4 take-home assignments (5%). Submission by the end of weeks: 4, 6, 9, and 12
Assignments are your opportunity to test your understanding of the course material and your
technical know-how. Furthermore, assignments allow you to test whether you can apply the
mathematical techniques introduced in this course in various engineering contexts
Solving the assignments is a good preparation for the exams. Do not simply copy assignment
solutions. Challenge yourself in order to grow intellectually and technically. Your path to
becoming a proficient engineer starts NOW
Whenever you face difficulties with your assignments, seek your instructors’ guidance.

2 Quizzes: 10% weight

You will sit 3 quizzes. Only your top 2 results will count. Quiz dates will be announced as the semester
goes by. However, a priori, you will sit the quizzes according to the following calendar:
Quiz 1: Lectures 1 to 4 and Worksheets 1 and 2, week 4
Quiz 2: Lectures 10 to 14 and Worksheets 6 and 7, week 9

Quiz 3: Lectures 15 to 18 and Worksheets 8 and 9, week 11

3 Midterm: 35% weight

The material required for the midterm: lectures 1 to 10 and worksheets 1 to 5

4 Final: 45% weight

The material required for the final: all the course lectures and worksheets (comprehensive exam).
