Marine Growth Preventing System - MGPS ST Type
Points to Noted in Designing and Installation
1. The system is designed such that voltage drop in wiring between Power Supply and Electrolytic Cell
will be 0.5V or less.
For guidance, sizes of electric wires causing voltage drop of 0.5V in forward and reverse paths of 5m
(total wires length is 10m) at various amperages are shown below:
3. The Power Supply is provided with a reverse-connection detection circuit for DC output. According to
the polarity of wiring connection with the Electrolytic Cell, the terminal attached to the Body at the
center is negative while the terminal inside the protection box on one side is positive.
The system is designed such that in case that the wiring is connected reversely, or a voltage drop
caused by energization exceeds about lV due to faulty connection on the negative side, the
reverse-connection detection circuit is activated, rendering output of the system zero.
The circuit is provided so as to function on condition that MGPS is installed on a steel ship, and
consequently, in the case of a wooden ship or FRP ship, both the Power Supply and Electrolytic Cell
need to be connected to earthing cables.
The circuit comprises a diode and an alarm fuse, wherein in case that current in excess of about 1A
flows from the earthing circuit to the negative terminal of DC output of the Power Supply, the alarm
fuse blows out, activating the contact mechanism, and rendering DC output to zero. Use of caution is
required that the lamp indicating operation does not go out even when the circuit is activated.
During a trial run after new installation ofthe system, please check whether the LED (light emission
diode) for red light provided on the printed circuit board for control inside the system light up or not
in case of no output current being generated when turning the system ON.
Of the LED light up, please check the alarm fuse of the reverse-connection detection circuit. Of inside
a small round hole on the surface of the fuse is found to be white in color, this shown that the
reverse-connection detection circuit is activated, blowing out the fuse. In such a case, please turn
OFF the Power Supply, and check wiring connection for the Electrolytic Cell. Please reset wiring
right and replace the alarm fuse with a new spare before restarting the system.

1. Introduction
Sea water pipeline systems installed on ships including Condenser, Cooler and
Accessory Piping are not free from considerable damage due to the deposit attacks
or clogging of the cooling pipes of such systems caused by the adhesion and propaga-
tion of micro-organisms, seaweeds, shells and other marine organisms on the pipes'
interior surface in direct contract with sea water.
Marine Growth Preventing System (MGPS) is an epoch-making system capable of solving
all such problems at a stroke.
With this anti-fouling system by means of the electrolization of sea water, the
adhesion of marine organisms onto the interior of sea water pipes can be prevented
by injecting into these pipes chlorine compounds resulting from the electrolization
of the salt contained in sea water.
Also, the system features very compact design, safe and harmless operation and, in
addition, extreme ease with which operational control can be achieved.

6. Operation Procedure
Procedure for operating System is given below in sequence. Refer to (6) of this
Section as final evaluation of the operation condition of System can be made only
on the basis of the measured concentration of Chlorine Compounds Concentration.
(1) Open fully Shipside Valve fitted on each Sea Chest into which Electrolized
Sea Water coming out of Electrolytic Cell is to be injected.
(2) Check Flow Setting Needle (red) of Flow Meter on the inlet side of the Cell
to make sure that it is set at the correct set value (i.e. min. flow rate
in the Cell) as given under Section 4 or in "Specifications" attached hereto.
If not, reset it at the correct value.
(3) Operate S.W. Pumps and make sure to keep the sea water flow· into the Cell
always at not less than the specified flow rate.
(Pertaining to the specified flow rate, i.e., sea water flow rate inside the
Cell ; normal rate refer to "Operation Plan" given under Section 4 or in
"Specifications" attached hereto).
(4) Check the sea water flow rate with Flow Meter readings and then work on Power
Supply instrument panel in the following manner ;
T. M. - 0 0 5 - 0 3 - 1 7 -8-
(5) Sea water electrolyzed inside Electrolytic Cell (Electrolyzed Sea Water) is
injected into Sea Chests through Injection Nozzles installed in respective
Sea Chests and mixed with sea water fed into respective Cooling Water Systems
of a ship.
Check the flow rates of sea water to be distributed among respective Sea Chests
described in "Operation Plan" given in "Specifications".
Adjust Distribution Valves on the outlet side of Electrolytic Cell for even
distribution of Electrolyzed Sea Water among Sea Chests by watching the read-
ings of Flow Meter for distribution.
. (6) Check whether Electrolyzed Sea water is distributed evenly into sea water in
respective Cooling Water Systems of a ship.
This can be achieved by determining Chlorine Compounds Concentration
(dependent on the volume of Electrolyzed_Sea Water mixed in sea water) of the
sea water taken out of Air Valve of each S.W. Pump sucking sea water in from
each Sea Chest by means of Colorimeter (Refer to "Procedure for Measuring
Chlorine Compounds Concentration" as described under Section 11).
Aim at the range . around of O.Q2ppm as the target level of Chlorine
Compounds Concentration of the sea water in respective Cooling Water Systems
when regulating the flow of Electrolyzed Sea Water into respective Sea Chests
with Distribution Valve.
It is recommended to measure Chlorine Compounds Concentration in clean sea
waters as described under Sub-section 9-2 of Section 9.
(7) As to the operating current amperage and the volume of Electrolyzed Sea Water
distributed into respective Sea Chests, appropriate for each of various
service conditions of a ship including such cases as when she is at sea, when
she is in port, etc., make necessary adjustments in accordance with the
procedures provided under Sub-sections, (l~). (5) and (6) of Section 6 above
by referring to "Operation Plan" of "Specifications".
(8) In case that, for some reason, the flow rate of sea water being supplied to
Electrolytic Cell drops below the set value (as indicated by Setting Needle
in red), the operation of Rectifier will come to a stop automatically by a
command signal sent from Differential-Pressure Type Flow Meter located on the
sea water inlet side of the Cell.
At this point, Pilot Lamp, "RUNNING" (green), goes out.
However in such a case as above, when the sea water flow rate reverts to the
set value or a higher value, the operation of Rectifier is automatically
resumed and Pilot Lamp, "RUNNING" (green), lights up again.
37707E
S I-I I P - 0 G 7 - 0 2 - 1 2 -9-
(9) In case of the operation of System being suspended for an extended period of
time (for one day or longer) ;
1) With regard to Power Supply Unit, turn "OUTPUT ADJUST" knob of DC Output
Voltage Regulator counterclockwise as far as it can go to the lowest output
·position and turn 11
0FP NFB on AC input side after turning 11
START-STOP 11
Change-over Switch to 11 STOP".
2) With regard to Electrolytic Cell, close Shipside Valves fitted on Sea Chests,
Sea Water Inlet Valve on the inlet side of the Cell and Distribution Valves
on the outlet side of the Cell.
Then, drain sea water off from the Cell by opening Drain Valve to the full.

9. Notes and References
(1) As to the operation current value (Amp.) and the amount of Electrolyte to
be distributed (m 3 /h) among Sea Chests under various operating conditions
of a ship (such as when a ship is at sea, in port etc.), refer to 11
0peration
Plan" given in Specifications".
11
Chlorine Concentration of the sea water taken on the outlet side of the
Cell can be obtained by the following formula
The consumption rate of the Chlorine Compounds generated by MGPS varies depend-
ing on the degree of pollution of the sea water in a ship's operating area
(i.e., dependent on the amount of bacteria, reducing substance and so on exist-
ing in the operating waters).
This is why there may be times when Chlorine Compounds Concentration can not
be detected by taking measurements at Air Valve of S.W. Pumps in polluted
waters even if System is being operated at the specified current value.
Therefore, make a point of taking measurement of Chlorine Compounds Concentra-
tion only in clean sea waters.

9-3. Electrolytic Products
Magnesium Hydroxide [Mg (OH)2J and Calcium Carbonate [CaC03] are inevitably
formed in Electrolytic Cell as the by-products of the electrolysis of sea
water.
Most of these by-products are discharged together with sea water but after
a long period and time in operation, part of them may adhere to the interior
of the Cell of build up inside the Cell, clogging it up.
Make a point of maintaining the sea water flow rate into the Cell above the
specified level because such a phenomenon as mentioned above constitutes a
cause for various troubles occurring with System.
(1) Stop operation of Power Supply Unit by turning NFB on the AC input side "OFF"
after turning 11 START-STOP" Change-over Switch to "STOP".
(2) Close both Sea Water Inlet Valve and Outlet Valve of Electrolytic Cell.
(3) Drain sea water out of the Cell by opening Drain Valve.
(4) Remove the connection box of electrode and Disconnect the lead wire to Anode.
Disassembly Procedure
(Refer to "Drawing for Assembling of Electrolytic Cell" attached hereto)
Reassemble Procedure
Check and clean up, the interior of the Cell including Anode and Packing etc.
Then, put the removed components back in position in the reverse order of the
steps as above (i.e., from Step (4) through Step (1)).
T. M. - 0 0 5 - 0 3 - 1 7 -1 6-
(6) In case that white substances (Magnesium Hydroxide, etc.) are adhered to the
surface of Anode removed from the Cell, clean up Anode surface in fresh water
or wipe the white formation out with a piece of new cloth, using utmost cau-
tion not to mar the Anode surface.
(7) Check the interior of Electrolytic Cell and in case that the formation of
Magnesium Hydroxide etc. is found deposited inside the Cell, remove it
thoroughly.
(9) Close Test Cock and Drain Valve and let sea water in by opening both Sea Water
Inlet Valve and Outlet Valve.
(10) Let air out by opening Test Cock and close the Sea Water Outlet Valve.
Then, check the condition qf Anode Mount for any leakage of water through it.
(11) Open Sea Water Outlet Valve and make necessary adjustment to restore the normal
operational condition of Electrolytic Cell.

11. Procedure for Measuring Chlorine Compounds Concentration
11-1. Measuring Instrument
Use the apparatus consisting of the following components to determine Chlorine
Compounds Concentration :
(a) Calorimeter (Com para tor) ( 0. 02 .-......o. 3 ppm) ·---- unit
(b) Axial Leader unit
(c) Test Reagent Tablet DPD No.4 ·---------------------- 100 tablets
(d) Test Tube (Glass) ---------- ·· ----------------------------- 2 pes
(e) Test Tube (Plastic) 2 pes
(d) (e)
ooo·ooo
oooooo
11-2. Measuring Procedure
Take measurements of chlorine Compounds Concentration in the following manner
(1) Open either S.W. Pump's Air Valve or Condenser's Drain Valve and let sea
water run out for about one minute to drain out all dirty substances deposit-
ed on these Valves.
(2) Fill Test Tube ( either Glass Tube (d) or Plastic Tube (e) ) up to the marked
line with sea water.
(3) Add one tablet of Test Reagent DPD No.4 (c) to the sample seawater in Test
Tube ( (d) or (e) ).
Make sure to get Test Reagent dissolved completely in sea water by stiring up
sea water as it will take about 2.-......3 minutes to dissolve one tablet completely.
(4) Assemble Calorimeter (a) with Axial Leader (b) by sliding the former down into
the front frame of the latter as shown in Fig. above.
The above components are so structured that, when assembled, each of 11
6"
cavities arranged in a row across Axial Leader is in exact alignment with each
of 11
6" square windowlets in a row (both upper row and bottom row) provided
across Calorimeter.
Place Test Tube bearing the sample sea water in one of the cavities of Axial
Leader, next to the one at the extreme left or right end.
(5) Hold the assembled apparatus in hand in such a way as light can strike the
surface of the sea water in Test Tube and then make the bottom of Axial Leader
flush with the bottom of Calorimeter as shown in Fig-A below.
T. M. - 0 0 5 - 0 3 - 1 7 -1 9-
This causes the incoming light incident on the mirror placed at the bottom of
each cavity to shine the liquid behind respective windowlets of the standard
color series in the bottom row for easy comparison of colors.
Determine the residual chlorine concentration of the sample sea water by
comparing its color with a color in the standard color series (The standard
colors of respective windowlets in the bottom row correspond to Chlorine
Compounds Concentration of 0.06/0.08/0.20/0.30 mg/ E or ppm respectively).
(6) By making the top end of Axial Leader flush with the top of Calorimeter in the
same way as under (5) above (see Fig-B), the incoming light shines the.liquid
behind the see-through windowlets in the upper row, enabling the determination
of the residual chlorine concentration by comparing the color of the sample sea
water with the standard colors of respective windowlets in the upper row (The
standard colors in the upper row correspond to Chlorine Compounds Concentration
of 0. 02/0. 04/0. 10/0. 15 mg/ E or ppm respectively) .

Notes :
(1) If, when taking measurements of Chlorine Compounds Concentration of Electrolyzed
Sea Water at Test Cock on the outlet side of Electrolytic Cell, Chlorine Compounds
Concentration should be too high to be measured by comparison of color in the
manner mentioned as above, dilute the sample sea water in Test Tube with distilled
water multiple times and then obtain Chlorine Compounds Concentration tentatively
in accordance with the above mentioned procedure.
Multiply the concentration value thus obtained by the dilution factor as above
to determine the true Chlorine Compounds Concentration.
(3) The source of light for measurement by comparison of color may be either the sun
or the fluorescent lamp.
(4) Unless Test Reagent DPD capsule is opened, the Reagent will have several year's
life if stored in a cool and dark place in dry atmosphere.
In case of Test Reagent DPD and accessories being required, you are requested to
contact us. We will be ready to supply them.
