Polynomial Functions
Polynomial functions are expressions that may
contain variables of varying degrees, non-zero
leading coefficients, positive exponents, and
constants.

𝑷 𝒙 = 𝒂𝒏 𝒙 + 𝒂𝒏−𝟏 𝒙 + ⋯ + 𝒂𝟏 𝒙 + 𝒂𝟎
Operator
where: Constant
a. Coefficients: represents real numbers (𝒂𝒏 , 𝒂𝒏−𝟏 , … , 𝒂𝟏 , 𝒂𝟎 );
b. 𝒂𝒏 ≠ 𝟎; and
c. Degree: 𝒏 represents some nonnegative integer.
Rational Functions
A rational function is a function that is the ratio of
two 𝟐 polynomials.
𝑷(𝒙) 𝒂𝒏 + 𝒂𝒏−𝟏 𝒙 𝒏
+ ⋯ + 𝒂𝟏 𝒙 + 𝒂𝟎𝒙𝒏−𝟏
𝒇 𝒙 = = 𝒎 𝒎−𝟏
𝑸(𝒙) 𝒃𝒎 𝒙 + 𝒃𝒎−𝟏 𝒙 + ⋯ + 𝒃𝟏 𝒙 + 𝒃𝟎
where:
𝑸(𝒙) ≠ 𝟎 : If the denominator of a rational function is zero, then it is undefined.
Rational Functions
𝑷(𝒙) The domain of the rational function is any value of
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙 where the rational function is defined.
𝑸(𝒙)
𝑫𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒙∈ℝ𝒙≠𝑸 𝒙 =𝟎
If the denominator of a rational function is equal to zero it is undefined.
Therefore, the restricted domain of a rational function is the set of
values that make the denominator equal to zero.
Note: For a rational function to be defined, we must determine its domain.

SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATIONS and INEQUALITIES
In solving rational equations:
1. Find the LCD.
2. Multiply both sides by the LCD. Solve the
resulting equation.
3. Check the solutions.

Given the rational equation, find the value of 𝒙 and check
your solutions.

SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATIONS and INEQUALITIES
In solving rational inequalities:
1. Rewrite the inequality as a single rational expression
on the side of the inequality symbol and 𝟎 on the other
side.
2. Determine over what intervals the rational expression
takes on positive and negatives values.
3. Summarize the intervals containing the solutions.
