Case Study 3: NutriCure Labs Scandal
(State vs. NutriCure Labs & Executives)
In 2023, Pakistan faced a major nutraceutical scandal involving NutriCure Labs, an
emerging company in the weight-loss and wellness industry. The controversy centered
around advertising and safety concerns related to its bestselling supplement, “TrimTide,”
which was allegedly linked to serious medical complications and at least one confirmed
fatality.
Situation:
NutriCure Labs, founded in 2017, quickly rose through Pakistan’s health and wellness sector
by marketing herbal supplements blended with modern science. Its most successful product,
TrimTide, was promoted as a “clinically tested, stimulant-free natural fat burner.” However,
the company’s reputation collapsed in mid-2023 following a series of hospitalizations and a
tragic death reportedly caused by the supplement.
The product had been aggressively advertised as “100% organic,” “endorsed by doctors,”
and “safe for all age groups,” but internal documents later revealed the inclusion of a
synthetic compound banned in several countries. A whistleblower from within NutriCure
exposed falsified research reports, hidden side effects, and deliberate marketing fraud. The
ensuing investigation led to nationwide backlash and swift legal proceedings.
FACTS OF THE CASE:
● NutriCure Labs’ “TrimTide” supplement was marketed with exaggerated claims,
including that it was a “natural, stimulant-free formula” and “recommended by
certified nutritionists,” without disclosing any risks.
● The product was later found to contain BMPEA (β-Methylphenylethylamine)—a
synthetic stimulant banned in multiple jurisdictions.
● Internal reports from NutriCure’s R&D team warned of side effects, but management
failed to disclose these and continued mass distribution.
● Multiple users of “TrimTide” reported adverse health effects including heart
palpitations, anxiety, kidney pain, and insomnia. At least one death—that of a
29-year-old woman who suffered cardiac arrest—was confirmed to be linked to the
supplement.
● Leaked internal emails showed top executives instructed the legal and PR teams to
“suppress backlash,” “delay DRAP responses,” and “manage media coverage.”
● The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) was accused of slow response,
but eventually suspended NutriCure’s license and collaborated with the FIA to
investigate.
● Investigations revealed falsified endorsements and paid testimonials from
nonexistent or unlicensed experts.
