The document compares Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) techniques for controlling three-phase voltage source inverters in wind energy systems. SVPWM offers advantages such as higher DC bus utilization (86.6% vs. 75% for SPWM), lower harmonic content, and fixed switching frequency. The document also discusses the operational principles of three-phase inverters and the implementation of both modulation techniques.

Comparison between spwm and svm
Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique is extensively used to
control the three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) of wind energy systems. The
main advantages of SVPWM method are fixed switching frequency, low harmonic
content and higher DC bus utilization. In terms of the use of the DC bus voltage
compared to conventional PWM method provides 15.15% more efficient usage
In SPWM, while maximum output voltage (Vmax) is equal to one-half of DC bus
voltage (VDC / 2), in SVPWM, Vmax is equal to one-third of root of DC bus voltage
(VDC / √3). Compared to SPWM method, SVPWM have higher DC voltage
utilization. Hereby, SPWM can use DC bus voltage maximum of 75%, SVPWM of
86.6%.

Fig .1 fig .2
The basic circuit of three-phase two-level voltage source inverter is shown in Fig.
2. Switching state of each phase branch are separately controlled by switching
variables of a, b and c. In this circuit, there are six IGBT power switches (S1, S2, S3,
S4, S5, and S6) that shape the output voltage and are controlled by a, b and c. In
operation of the three-phase VSI, the switches located in the same branch require
not to be transmission at the same time
Three-phase VSI has six-active and two-zero switching state. In Fig. 3, active and
zero vectors based on the switching status are shown. There is an angle of 60º
between vectors and vectors constitute a hexagonal. Here, while V1 to V6 are
active vectors, V0 and V7 are zero vectors. While active vectors allow for the
exchange of the inverter output voltage, zero voltage vectors by short-circuiting
lower or upper set of switches, make zero the output voltage value. Thus, to
achieve optimum performance and minimum switching loss of harmonics, in the
transition from one sector to the next sector, only switching state in the one arm
of the inverter varies

Space vector PWM is an advanced technique used for variable frequency drive
applications. It utilizes dc bus voltage more effectively and generates less THD in
the Three Phase Voltage Source Inverter. SVPWM utilize a chaotic changing
switching frequency to spread the harmonics continuously to a wide band area so
that the peak harmonics can be reduced greatly, in sinusoidal PWM three phase
reference modulating signals are compared against a common triangular carrier to
generate the PWM signals for the three phases. It is simple and linear between 0%
and 78.5% of six step voltage values, which results in poor voltage utilization.

How to implement svm

For spwm

For unipolar
Several pulses per half cycle are used as multi-PWM. In multi-PWM, pulses widths
are equal. But in unipolar SPWM, pulse width is a sinusoidal function of the
angular
For 3φ SPWM
As modulation index decreases, the total harmonic distortion of the output
current (THDi) increases.
During over-modulation (ma>1), as ma increases, the total harmonic distortion of
the output current increases.
