Until recently, the body has been almost completely ignored in theories
and empirical research in psychology in general, and in developmen-
tal psychology in particular. This neglect is partly due to the Cartesian
split between mind and body, which has held sway over philosophy and
psychology for the last centuries. As a consequence of Cartesian dual-
ism, psychologists and developmental psychologists, in particular, have
considered emotions, sociality, and cognition independently of the
body, analogous to the software program of a computer that should be
studied apart from its hardware.
Recently, increasing dissatisfaction with Descartes’ dualism has
been expressed in different scientific disciplines, including biology and
neuroscience, philosophy, anthropology, and psychology. Common to
this movement is the conviction that Descartes’ dualist conception of
body and mind is inadequate. Hence, several alternative conceptions
of the relation between body and mind have been developed. Common
among these conceptions is the idea that the body plays an important
role in human emotional, social, and cognitive life.
This volume is largely based on the 32nd Anniversary Symposium
of the Jean Piaget Society: The Study of Knowledge and Development,
entitled, The embodied mind and consciousness: Developmental perspec-
tives. The intent of the symposium was (a) to illustrate different ways in
which the concept of embodiment can be used in developmental psy-
chology; (b) to show that the concept of embodiment has important
implications for theoretical and empirical work in different areas of
psychology; and (c) to demonstrate that the concept of embodiment is a
bridge concept that spans biological, psychological, and socio‑cultural
approaches to development.
The chapters in this volume explore the role of the body in the devel-
opment of meaning, consciousness, and psychological functioning.
In chapter 1, Overton discusses the concept of embodiment from a
meta-theoretical perspective. Johnson (chapter 2) examines the role
