Package holidays, covering a two weeks' stay in an attractive location are increasingly popular,
because they offer an inclusive price with few extras. Once you get to the airport, it is up to the tour
operator to see that you get safely to your destination. Excursions, local entertainment, swimming,
sunbathing, skiing - you name it - it's all laid on for you. There is, in fact, no reason for you to bother
anything yourselves. You make friends and have a good time, but there is very little chance that you
will really get to know the local people. This is even less likely on a coach tour, when you spend almost
your entire time travelling. Of course, there are carefully scheduled stops for you to visit historic
buildings and monuments, but you will probably be allowed only a brief stay overnight in some famous
city, with a polite reminder to be up and breakfasted early in time for the coach next morning. You may
visit the beautiful, the historic, the ancient, but time is always at your elbow. There is also the added
disadvantage of being obliged to spend your holiday with a group of people you have never met before,
may not like and have no reasonable excuse for getting away from. As against this, it can be argued
that for many people, particularly the lonely or elderly, the feeling of belonging to a group, although for
a short period on holiday, is an added bonus. They can sit safely back in their seat and watch the world
go by.

A good deal of fascinating research has been done into the reading patterns of young people, and it's
surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing preferences for particular kinds of
books. A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habit of primary school children, showed
that even seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what they want to read. Girls, in
general, read more, and far more girls than boys preferred reading stories. Boys were showing a taste
for the more instant appeal of picture stories, or else books about their hobbies.
These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers. Apparently girls read more in
general, but more fiction in particular. You could say that there are more opportunities for girls to read
fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their early teens, and by their late teens, girls
have probably moved on to the adult women's magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about
their hobbies: sports, motorcycles, heavy transport and so on.

The world above the forest floor can be observed by all of US. Rarely, however, do we take the time
to notice the teeming life and bustling activity that occurs beneath the ground we walk on.
Of all soil-dwelling creatures, the most abundant are mites and springtails, insect-like creatures that
literally eat their way through caverns of subterranean vegetation. The tiny, eight-legged mites lay their
eggs on plant matter, which their larvae eat and convert into fresh soil. The bright-colored springtails
are named for their ability to leap long distances during their search for decomposed plant matter to eat.
Both mites and springtails are prey to a host of soil-dwelling predators. They thus anchor one end of
the food chain that extends to higher forms of forest "lowlife", such as moles that feed on earthworms
and shrews that eat beetles.
Those mammals, in turn, dig tunnels that function as underground byways for other subterranean
species. Hibernating chipmunks, turtles, and salamanders sift and mix the soil when they burrow to
winter dens. Cottontails and gray foxes excavate shallow dens as sanctuary from predators and harsh
weather, while gray squirrels, hiding acorns for the lean season, further blend the earth. From microbe
to people, thousands of species work the land upon which all life depends.

People invent things to enhance their lives. Today, inventions are mostly improvements of previous
inventions. With technology, inventions are taking a shorter and shorter time to complete.
One such invention is the camera. The time taken to invent the camera in the sixteenth century was
prolonged due to the lack of technology and scientific knowledge. When inventors first tried to take a
photograph in 1558, the image could not stay on the paper permanently. It was only in 1837 that
inventors managed to produce pictures that did not fade away.
With the invention of the camera, further improvements were made and the first underwater camera
was invented in 1856. It was placed in a tightly sealed container. However, when the contraption was
underwater, the container broke before many pictures were taken. It was only in the 1980s that a
camera was made to be able to go deep underwater without being damaged. Less than twenty years
later, technology allowed underwater cameras to take photographs in color and to go even deeper into
the water. The cameras even looked like a fish.
With better technology, an invention will never stay stagnant. People will be relentless in their

Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia that is available on the Internet and what people love about it
is that it can be edited by absolutely everybody.
When and how did it start? It was founded in 2001 by a guy called Jimmy Wales. It started as a
fancy idea, a kind of hobby and everybody is surprised how popular it has become and how
many computer scientists it has attracted. It has got a collection of about 1.8 m articles, the
majority of which are in English; however, one can find some articles in over 200 languages. If
it was a business, it would earn lots of money.
How is it possible that articles that can be changed by anyone are correct? The Wikipedia is
based on wikis - a special software which lets everyone modify a webpage and it is true that
anyone can change the information on the page if they think it's incorrect. But, the Wikipedia
has a team of over 13,000 people who are experts in different fields and who correct any
inaccurate information sent by people.
Is it error-free? One may say so. Recently, for example, the British journal Nature looked at
the scientific information in Wikipedia and confirmed it was very reliable and that they didn't
find many errors. It was very good news for the founder as well as for all the users.
Why is it becoming so popular? Like the whole idea of the Internet, it's also quick and available
to everyone. The greatest thing of all is that it is free. Some people also stress that it's fun to be
able to add what you know to the information on the net. IT specialists believe it has a very
bright future and most claim it's the most brilliant invention ever.

each of the questions.
Desert tundra, or cold desert, occurs on the Arctic edges of North America, Europe, and Asia. The
word tundra comes from a Finnish word tunturia, which means barren land. In the desert tundra, the
temperatures are almost always freezing, and they cause an environment in which plant life is virtually
impossible. Plant life is made impossible by two different extreme conditions, either a lack or an
overabundance of water.
During at least three quarters of the year, the Arctic is frozen. The Arctic is far from the equator.
This means the sunlight reaching the soil contains less energy than at the equator. The existence of ice
rather than water for the majority of the year means that vegetation does not have enough moisture for
growth to take place.
During the period of time when the temperature increases enough for ice to melt, there is generally a
large volume of water. Too much water and not enough drainage through the frozen subsoil make it
difficult for plants to grow. Despite this, about 1,700 kinds of plants grow on tundra, including reindeer
mosses, liverworts, and grasses. The 400 varieties of flowers found add a wide range of colors.

each of the questions.
Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors but also because of rays from the sun and
other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth. Light gets through, and this is
essential for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment endurable.
Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from
the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere, they are exposed to this radiation but
their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.
Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”.
Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being
damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be
sure about radiation damage - a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs
may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed children or even
grandchildren.
Missions of the Apollo flights have had to cross belts of high radiation, and during the outward and
return journeys, the Apollo crew accumulated a large amount of rems. So far, no dangerous amounts of
radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know
yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the
atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation,
but no really effective ones have been found so far.

attendance is compulsory. Morning classes begin at nine o dock and last until half past four in the
afternoon. After classes, most English children often stay at school and take part in extracurricular
activities like sports, singing and dancing. Schools are open five days a week. On Saturdays and
Sundays there are no lessons. There are holidays at Christmas, Easter and in summer. In London as in
all cities there are two grades of schools for those who will go to work at fifteen: primary schools for
boys and girls between the ages of five and eleven, and secondary schools for children from eleven to
fifteen.
Besides such compulsory lessons as reading, writing, the English language, English literature,
English history, geography, science, and nature study, children in England can take many optional
subjects like drawing, painting, singing, or woodwork to develop their aptitudes.

Tropical cyclones are called typhoons in Asia and hurricanes in North an America. These forms
go around like a wheel turning to the left when they ni northern part of the world. They have wind
speeds of 60 kph or more. In the United the Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, Florida keeps an eye
out for hurricanes.
When meteorologists detect a hurricane, they give it a name. They can use ei male or female
name. Why should tropical cyclones have names? The name makes it easy for people to keep up with
information about a hurricane and its possible dangers.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an international weather group. decides what names
will be used. The WMO makes lists of names using the English alphabet. Each name on the list starts
with a different letter. The first hurricane of the year gets the first name on that year's list. The second
hurricane gets the next name. For examples if the first hurricane is named Abel, the second might be
named Betty. The name lists do include names beginning with the letters Q, U, X. Y and Z. There
aren't many names that begin with these letters.
Asian countries use a different list, which is made up by the WMO's Typhoon Committee. This
list has a few personal names, but most of the names are of flowers, animals, trees, and other similar
things.

Television and Kids
Television is very popular and even has some benefits for kids. It helps very young children
learn the letters of the alphabet, and helps other kids learn about science, cultures, and world events.
However, researchers show that too much TV is bad for children. For one thing, there is a link
between watching more than four hours of TV a day and being overweight. For another thing, many
TV shows are violent and upsetting. Watching these shows may cause kids to be more fearful. And of
course, more time in front of the TV means less time to study. Too much TV may also be the cause of
lower grades. Experts do not agree on the solution to these problems. Some say that kids should watch
only educational programs; others say kids should watch no TV at all. And others suggest teaching
them to watch TV as occasional entertainment, not as an everyday hobby.

Out in the Pacific Ocean, 3,700 kilometers from Los Angeles, are the islands of Hawaii, the

The first Hawaiians arrived from other Pacific islands sometime around 100 AD. Then in 1778,
Captain Cook visited Hawaii. He put the islands on his maps of the Pacific Ocean. Then more ships

In 1820, a small group of people from the eastern United States came to teach the Hawaiian
people about Christianity. They started farms to grow sugar cane and pineapples. Because there were
not enough people to do all the farm work, farm owners brought in Asians - Chinese, Japanese, and
Filipinos.
Later Koreans, Portuguese, and Puerto Ricans also came. More people came from the US
mainland and from other Pacific islands, and Hawaii became an island with traditions from several
countries. People from the various nation groups have married each other, so today the groups are
partly mixed.

In the 1960s, the Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in the whole world. Since
then, there have been a great many groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is difficult now to
imagine how sensational The Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the north of England
and none of them had any training in music. They started by performing and recording songs by black
Americans and they had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own songs and
that was when they became really popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop
group to achieve great success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became common
for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit
record was in 1963 and they split up in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it
had become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to
take their clothes as souvenirs! However, today some of their songs remain as famous as they were
