Translation and Localization

Detailed yet accessible, Translation and Localization brings together the re-
search and insights of veteran practicing translators to offer comprehensive
guidance for technical communicators. The volume begins with the funda-
mentals of translation before leading readers through the process of preparing
technical documents for translation. It then presents the broader area of local-
ization, again beginning with its key competencies. Concluding chapters exam-
ine the state of the field as computers take on more translation and localization
work. Featuring real-life scenarios and a broad range of experienced voices, this
is an invaluable resource for technical and professional communicators looking
to expand into international markets. This book will be of interest to students
of ethnic conflict, Asian politics, and security studies.

Bruce Maylath is Professor of English at North Dakota State University (USA)

and Director of the university’s program in Upper-Division Writing.

Kirk St.Amant is Professor and Eunice C. Williamson Endowed Chair in Tech-

nical Communication at Louisiana Tech University (USA), Adjunct Professor
of International Health and Medical Communication with the University of
Limerick (Ireland), and Guest Professor of Usability and Design with Southeast
University (China).

This book would not have been possible without the knowledge and patience of
its talented contributors; the perceptive and helpful recommendations of blind
reviewers; the encouragement of Tharon Howard, editor of the ATTW Series in
Technical Communication; the guidance of Nicole Salazar, editor at Routledge/
Taylor & Francis; and the support of our spouses and families. We thank them
all profusely.
Series Editor Foreword

It has been my pleasure to include Bruce Maylath and Kirk St.Amant’s edited
collection Translation and Localization: A Guide for Professional and Technical
Communicators in the ATTW Series in Technical and Professional Commu-
nication. Sadly, our field (particularly in the United States) has suffered from
what Bruce calls “a cult of monolingualism.” There are certainly organizations
like NAFSA which provide useful and important work on translation and even
machine translation in a generalized way, but there is surprising lack on cur-
rent research and scholarship that speaks directly to the needs of technical and
professional communicators. However, as one reviewer of the manuscript put it:
“Together, the chapters in this collection provide an exciting up-to-date over-
view of localization and translation as complementary activities that hinge on
the constant interactions between humans and machines. Individually, each
chapter fulfills the purpose it describes, while pointing to the contents of com-
plementary chapters.”
Today, our Technical and Professional Communication classrooms are
uniquely positioned to prepare our students to become leaders in the translation
and localization activities of their companies. The chapters in this collection are
all intended to move our courses beyond merely training students to “trans-
late” scientific and technical content into “a language” which English-speaking
laypersons can understand, and instead, the chapter authors help us see ways
to make our courses pathways to citizenship in both local and global contexts.
The chapters in this collection all challenge us to go beyond producing grad-
uates who develop the texts that explain how a given process works or how a
particular technology operates and encourage both practitioners and faculty to
situate the usability and accessibility of information products into the realm of
communication practices at the local level.
xiv Series Editor Foreword

Maylath and St.Amant have assembled some of the best and brightest schol-
ars in the field as contributors to this volume. As a result, this book provides an
important contribution to our field’s understanding of the theoretical frame-
works and empirical research methodologies which are being used to approach
issues such as web localization, technical translation, “controlled” language,
cultural competencies, virtual teams, and machine translation. In our “global
economy” and in a world where Internet access connects billions of people
across international borders, it’s easy to understand why TPC practitioners and
academics need the introduction to emerging trends in translation and local-
ization this book offers.
Again, I’m thrilled that this collection is part of the ATTW Series in Tech-
nical and Professional Communication. The topic is totally consistent with and
wholly appropriate for the ATTW Series and provides exactly the blend of solid
scholarship and pedagogical application that we’re seeking in the Series.

Foreword
Pavel Zemliansky

I’d like to begin with an anecdote. A long time ago and in a land far, far away,
I used to work as a translator and interpreter. I was often hired both to trans-
late business and technical documents and to provide oral interpretation at
business meetings, conferences, and other professional events. One day, I was
working as an interpreter at a three-day business meeting between executives
of a large elevator-manufacturing company and a client who wanted to buy a
lot of elevators from them. On day three of the meeting, during a fancy dinner
at an expensive restaurant, I was asked to interpret into English an impromptu
pitch from the client, who was hoping to close the deal right then and there. The
client, a gray-haired man in his sixties, began a sentence, got through it halfway,
then looked at me. I looked back at him, waiting for him to finish the sentence.
He continued to look at me then said, “Please translate what I have just said.” “I
cannot do that,” I replied. “Why not?” said the client. “Because I need to hear at
least the rest of the sentence and, preferably, several more sentences to provide a
meaningful interpretation,” I responded. The man looked at me, bemused, then
finished the sentence, which enabled me to do my job.
I hope my anecdote shows how dependent successful translation and inter-
pretation are on context and the immediate linguistic, cultural, and physical
environments. A somewhat meaningful interpretation of a partial statement
may have been possible in that businessman’s mother tongue due to its syntax
and word-order rules. However, the rules of English syntax and the cultural
context of the situation made such a partial interpretation impossible.
When the editors of this volume asked me to write this foreword, I wel-
comed the opportunity. As a former translator and interpreter, I find the vol-
ume’s primary goal—to give technical communicators facility with translation
and localization—very worthwhile. Also, as I read through the chapters, as a
