Sample Lesson Plan


(Level 4 - Unit 1 & Review)
Unit 1 bl, fl, gl, sl (1/2)
Objectives By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
1) Say the “bl”, “fl”, “gl”, “sl” sounds.
2) Read and write the target words with the “bl”, “fl”, “gl”, “sl” sounds.
Materials  Phonics Monster 4 (pp. 6-9)
 Phonics Monster 4 CD (Track 3-5)
 Phonics Monster 4 Workbook (pp.4-5) *sold separately

Warm-up (5 min.)
1. Preview
1) Put the alphabet cards b , f , g , s , l on the board. Check the name of the letters and their
sounds by asking, "What letters are they? What sounds do they make?"
2) Ask Ss about words with “bl”, “fl”, “gl”, “sl” sounds. Emphasize the sounds and read the following words
together: black, flag, globe, slide.

Main Lesson (25 min.)


1. Presentation (p. 6)
1) Put the alphabet cards b and l on the board. T says the sounds out loud and have Ss repeat them.
Put the alphabet cards together b → l and make b l .
2) T says the sound out loud and have Ss repeat it.
3) Use the above method to practice “fl”, “gl”, and “sl”.
4) Have Ss do "Listen, point, and repeat." (Track 3)
TIP Check whether Ss can distinguish the sounds correctly by pointing at the relevant letter and reading
it.
5) Have Ss watch the video.

2. Practice (p. 7)
1) Have Ss do "Listen and circle." (Track 4)
2) Have Ss do "Look, fill, and write."

3. Presentation (p. 8)
1) Write “bl" on the board 3 times and have Ss read it.
2) Put the “ack”, “ade”, and “ue” after each “bl" to make “black”, “blade”, “blue”. Then have Ss read the
words.
3) Use the above method to practice the words on p. 8: flag, flame, flute, globe, glass, glue, slide, sled,
sleep.
4) Show the above 12 flashcards (vocabulary side) and have Ss read them. Flip the cards and have Ss check
the relevant pictures to understand the meanings.
TIP Take time to show the pictures thoroughly so that Ss can connect the words they are reading with
the meanings (pics).
5) Have Ss do "Listen and repeat." (Track 5)

4. Practice (p. 9)
1) Have Ss do "Stick and write."
TIP Help Ss put the stickers, read the words together, and write the words.
Wrap-up (10 min.)
1. Produce
1) Give worksheets Unit 1-1, Unit 1-2 to Ss and check if they understand the instructions.
TIP If there’s time, do them together in class. If not, give them as homework

2. Homework Assignment: Workbook pp. 4-5

Warm-up (5 min.)
1. Review of the last class
1) Write "b" on the board and check if Ss can read it. Write "l" after it and check if Ss can read "bl". Write
"ack" after it and check if Ss can read "black". Use the same method to check if Ss can read “flag”,
“globe”, and “slide”.

Main Lesson (25 min.)


1. Presentation (p. 10)
1) Picture Walk Activity:
① T ask questions and Ss answer by looking at the first picture. "What do you see?" "I see _________.
(a sled, blades, flames)"
② T ask questions and Ss answer by looking at the second picture. "What do you see?" "I see
_________. (a slide, a sled)“ & “What color is the sled?” “It is black.”
③ T ask questions and Ss answer by looking at the third picture. "What do you see?" "I see _________.
(a lake)” “What color is the lake?” “It is blue.”
TIP This is an activity to help Ss predict the story before reading it. Ss are in the level where they may
not understand the questions and answer them correctly. So, use exaggerated actions and
expressions to convey the meanings. Please check if Ss can read the phonics words correctly by
looking at the pictures.
2) Have Ss repeat the following sight words correctly and fast: down, into, it, stop. Have Ss do "Find &
Circle".
3) Check if Ss remember the following phonics words by showing the relevant pictures with the flashcards:
black, sled, slide, blade, flame, glass, blue. Then show the words and check if Ss can read them
correctly.
4) Reading Activity:
① Have Ss do "Listen and repeat." (Track 6)
② Read aloud. Check if Ss read the story correctly by having Ss read in different groups, such as boys
vs. girls.

2. Practice (p. 11)


1) Have Ss do "Read and match. Then trace."
2) Have Ss do "Check YES or NO.”

3. Unit Master (pp. 12-13)


1) Have Ss do "Listen, check, and circle." (Track 7)
2) Have Ss do "Say, color, and write."
3) Have Ss do "Match and circle. Then say."
Wrap-up (10 min.)
1. Produce
1) Give worksheet Unit 1-3 to Ss and check if they understand how to do it.
TIP If there’s time, do it together in class. However, if there’s no time, it’s okay to give it as homework.

① Write the letter “b” and check if Ss can say the sound.

③ Use the above method to check if Ss can read “fl”, “gl”, and “sl”.
④ Write “bl" 2 times and write “ack” or “ade” after each “bl”. Check if Ss can read the following words:
black, blade.
⑤ Use the above method to check if Ss can read the following words: flag, flame, glad, glass, sled, slide,
slim.
⑥ Use the flashcards to show the pictures and have Ss say the words to check if they can relate the
pictures with the words correctly (If some pictures are not available, use PPT Resource instead.).
TIP If Ss cannot read the phonics words fluently, practice more and then read the story.
2) Sight Words
① Write the following sight words on the board: he, his, of, this, warm. T reads the words slowly and
correctly. Ss listen and repeat.
② T reads the words fast one by one. Ss repeat them 3 times fast.
③ Explain each sight word’s meaning in Korean.

Main Lesson (20 min.)


1. Prediction (pp. 4-7)
1) Check the title by asking, "What is the title?"
2) Picture Walk
① p. 4: What do you see? Where is the pirate? Find and circle “blade.”
② p. 5: What does the pirate have? Find and circle “flag.”
③ p. 6: Is the pirate having fun? Find and circle “sled.”
④ p. 7: What does the pirate have? Is he happy? Is he cold or warm? Find and circle “flame.”

2. Read (pp. 4-7)


1) Listen (CD Track 55). Have Ss point to the relevant words as they listen. Explain the meanings of words
that Ss don’t know so that they can understand them correctly.
TIP T can ask Ss about words that they don’t know after finishing reading or after each page (according
to Ss’ level).
2) Read aloud. Have Ss read one by one in groups or individually.
3. Comprehension (pp. 4-7)
1) Give 1 min. for Ss to read on their own.
2) Cloze Reading: Have Ss close the book. T read the story without some phonics words or sight words. Ss
say the correct words that go into the blanks.
TIP T can clearly show the blanks by whistling or clapping.

Wrap-up (10 min.)


1. Comprehension Check (p. 8)
1) Have Ss do “Look and circle”.
2) Have Ss do “Read and write the correct alphabet.”

2. Chant. (CD Track 65): Listen to the CD with Ss and chant.


TIP Do the chant in a feel-good manner so that T can end the lesson in a good note.

3. Homework Assignment: Listen to “Unit 1 The Pirate!” 3 times and repeat 3 times.

Objectives By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

5) Write “c” and “g” on the board and check if Ss can read them.
TIP Please check if Ss remember the hard/soft “c” and “g” sounds.
6) Write “c” 3 times on the board. Then write “a”, “o”, “u” after each “c” and check if Ss can read the hard
“c” sound.
7) Write “c” 3 times on the board. Then write “e”, “i”, “y” after each “c” and check if Ss can read the soft “c”
sound.
8) Write “ndy” after “ca” and “ty” after “ci” to check if Ss can read “candy” and “city”.
9) Use the above method to check if Ss can read words with hard/soft “g” sounds.

Main Lesson (15 min.)


1. Practice (pp. 47-49)
1) Have Ss do "Find and circle the words." on p. 47.
2) Have Ss do "Read, write, and circle." on p. 48.
3) Have Ss do "Look and write." on p. 49.
Wrap-up (10 min.)
1. Produce
1) Get Ss into pairs. Have them prepare alphabet cards. Show the flashcards (picture side) from this review
unit and have Ss make words using the alphabet cards. For example, if T shows the picture of “black”,
then Ss should make the word “black” with their alphabet cards. Once a team makes the word, the team
should say it out loud. The first team to make the correct word gets 1 point. The team who has the most
points is the winner.
2) Play the board game.
TIP If there’s not enough time, it’s okay to choose one of the above activities and play it.
