J R CAMBRIGE SCHOOL CISCE BOARD

WORKSHEET – BASED ON K MAP AND BOOLEAN POSTULATION

Question 1:
(i) A shopping mall announces a special discount on all its products as a festival offer only to those who satisfy
any one of the following conditions.
If he/she is an employee of the mall and has a service of more than 10 years.
OR
A regular customer of the mall whose age is less than 65 years and should not be an employee of the mall.
OR
If he/she is a senior citizen but not a regular customer of the mall.
The inputs are:
INPUTS
E Employee of the mall
R Regular customer of the mall
S Service of the employee is more than 10 years
C Senior citizen of 65 years or above
(In all the above cases, 1 indicates yes and 0 (zero) indicates no)
Output: X - Denotes eligibility for discount [1 indicates eligibility and 0 indicates ineligibility in all cases]
Draw a truth table for the inputs given above and write the SOP expression for X (E, R, S, C). [5]

(ii) Reduce the above expression X(E,R,S,C) by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups
(i.e., octal, quads and pairs).
(iii)Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression. Assume that the variables and their complements
are available as inputs.

Question 2
(a) Reduce the Boolean function F(P,Q,R,S) = (P+Q+R+S) (P+Q+R+S') (P+Q+R'+S) (P+Q'+R+S)
(P+Q+R+S) (P+Q'+R'+S) (P+Q'+R'+S) (P'+Q+R+S) (P'+Q+R+S') by using 4-variable Karnaugh map,
showing the various groups (i.e. octal, quads and pairs).
Question 3:
(1) Given the Boolean function F(A,B,C,D) = ∑(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13).
(a) Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e. octal,
quads and pairs).
Question 4
(1) Given the Boolean function F(A,B,C,D) = ∑(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13).
(a) Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e. octal,
quads and pairs).
Question 5:
Given the Boolean function F(A,B,C,D) = π(0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15).
Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e. octal, quads
and pairs).
Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression. Assum that the variables and their complements are
available as inputs.

Question 6:
(i) A family intends to purchase a smartphone depending on the criteria given below:
Quad core processor with internal memory of 64 GB or more but not a resale phone
OR
Resale phone with quad core processor but without warranty
OR
Processor is not a quad core but with a warranty of 1 year and the internal memory is of 64 or more
The inputs are:
Input
P Quad core processor
M Internal memory of 64 GB or more
R Resale phone
W Warranty of 1 year
(In all the above cases, 1 indicates yes and 0 indicates no.)
Output: X [1 indicates purchased, 0 indicates not purchased for all cases] Draw the truth table for the inputs and
outputs given above and write the SOP expression
Question 7
(i) Given the Boolean function F(A,B,C,D) = 2(0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13)
Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e. octal, quads
and pairs).
Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression using NAND gates.. Assume that the variables and their
complements are available as inputs.
Question 8:
Given F(P,Q,R,S) = π (0, 1, 2, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15)
(a) Reduce the above expression by using 4-variable Karnaugh map, showing the various groups (i.e. octal,
quads and pairs).
Draw the logic gate diagram for the reduced expression using NOR gates.. Assume that the variables and their
complements are available as inputs.
Question 9
(i) The owner of a company pays bonus to his salesmen as per the given criteria given below: If the salesman
works overtime for more than 4 hours but does not work on off days/holidays.
OR
If the salesman works when festival sales are on and updates showroom arrangements.
OR
If the salesman works on an off day/holiday when festival sales are on.
The inputs are:

Inputs
0 Works overtime for more than 4 hours
F Festival sales are on
H. Works on an off day/holiday
U. Updates showroom arrangements
(In all the above cases 1 indicates Yes and 0 indicates No)
The Outputs are:
X [1 indicates Yes and 0 indicates No in all cases]
Draw the truth table for the inputs and outputs given above and write the POS expression for X (O, F, H, U).
