Kinematics of flow (finite vs. progressive deformation, vorticity, spin, different types of shear);
strain analysis (different methods); Stress analysis and 3D Mohr Circle; Mohr Stress Circle vs.
Mohr Strain Circle; Rheology (different rheological models); Deformation mechanisms and
microstructures (flow laws, intracrystalline deformation, different types of creep, deformation
mechanism maps); shear zones and shear structures (shear bands, sheath folds, porphyroclasts,
pressure fringes); Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) and its application in structural
geology (basic principles, graphical representation and relation between AMS and strain);
Reference frame and kinematic analysis in structural geology; Brittle deformation (various
failure criteria viz. Coulomb-Navier, Griffith); Fold and Thrust Belts (including introduction to
cross-section balancing); Extensional tectonics; Impact Structures; Examples of structures in
different orogenic belts (Singhbum, Dharwar, Aravalli, Himalaya and Alps; including map
interpretations/tutorials); Petrofabric analysis and fabric quantification in structural Geology.
