2nd Term Assignments

This document contains a series of questions related to digital communication techniques including PCM, DM, and PSK. It provides sample questions about determining signal to noise ratios, bit rates, bandwidth requirements, and modulation parameters for systems using these digital modulation and coding techniques to transmit signals over communication channels. It also includes questions about avoiding slope overload in DM systems, signal constellations for BPSK, drawbacks of BPSK and how DPSK addresses them, and modulating and recovering carrier signals for duo-binary signals.

2nd Term Assignments (PCM,DM and PSK) Sub: DCT 6th sem ETC Faculty: Dr. P. Kanungo and Mr. G.Routray Date:15.04.2012 Q. A signal having a bandwidth equal to 3.5 KHz is sampled, quantized and coded by PCM system. The coded signal is then transmitted over a transmission channel that supports a transmission rate of 56Kbps. Determine the maximum signal-to-noise ratio that can be obtained by this system. The input signal has a peak-to-peak value of 4 Volts and an r.m.s value of 0.2 Volts. Q. A DM transmitter with a fixed step of 0.5 V, is given a sinusoidal message signal. If the sampling frequency is twenty times the Nyquist rate, determine i. the maximum permissible amplitude of the message signal, if slope overload is to be avoided. ii. determine the maximum destination SNR under the above condition. Q. If a TV signal of 45 MHz bandwidth is transmitted using 8bit binary PCM, determine i. the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. ii. the minimum bit rate iii. the minimum transmission bandwidth needed. Q. The pulse rate in a DM system is 56000 per second, the input signal is 5Cos(2*pi*1000*t)+2Cos(2*pi*2000*t) volts, with t in seconds. Find the minimum value of step size which wil avoid slope overload distortion. What would be the value larger than the minimum. Q. (i) Draw the signal constellation for a binary phase-shift keying signal set if the signals are and .

(ii) Also determine and sketch the lowpass equivalent spectrum of these PSK signals. Q. What are the draw backs of BPSK? How these can be rectified in DPSK? IF d(t) is 001010011010, determine b(t) and plot the waveforms. Q Show that the signal to quantization noise ratio for a message signal m(t) with peak amplitude mp is given by SNR= . Where M is the number of quantization levels. Also show that for

sinusoidal modulation SNR=6N+1.76dB. Where, N is the number of bits required to encode a sample.

Q. Show that if two duo-binary signals and . Show that the carrier signals coswot and sinwot . modulated using carrier signals which are in time quadrature and the modulated signal is can be recovered in the receiver by filtering the signal

Q. The data b(t) consists of the bit stream 001010011010. Assume that the bit rate fb is equal to the carrier frequency fo and sketch VBPSK(t).

Note: For 2nd internal the questions will come from PCM,DM, ADM, Noise in PCM, Noise in DM and Digital modulation techniques(upto QASK). All the best for the 2nd internal test.
