Document Summary:

My relationship with Victor spanned for about 10 years now. Having schooled together, Victor is
one of the most intelligent and detailed-oriented persons I have been fortunate to know in my life.
Although our paths crossed at the Engineering school, we became extremely close because we
share so many things in common, and this is why when I decided to organize a session on PTDF
scholarship interview questions and answers I could not have thought about a better person than
him.

Truly, I wish I could have enough space to write about my personal relationship with him and how
we went through some big graph of ups and downs back in the days. However, when my memoir
becomes ready, you will get to read a dedicated chapter for him. This, I promise you, so help me
God!

This document is developed by Haruna Inuwa and Victor Adedigba, and therein we shared our
individual experiences during the PTDF interview exercise and some other scholarship interviews.
Specifically, we wish to make an open disclaimer that we are not in any way related to PTDF,
outside being scholars willing to give back to the society. As such, the questions and answers do
not guarantee automatic offer for the scholarship. However, if read with open mind, the document
could serve as a guiding force to cracking the codes behind difficult scholarship interviews out
there not only PTDF.

Finally, this document is divided into two parts. Part I authored by Victor where he shared
questions and answers for the MSc category and some general questions and answers. Part II was
authored by Haruna highlighted some questions and answers related to the PhD scholarship
interview questions.

SECTION 2-- ANSWER TIPS

Introductory Question Answer Tip:

This question type tests your composure and communication. It tests how confident you are in
presenting yourself in structure. In addition, they also want to know if the scholarship fits your
profile and story.
Advice: Structure your answer in the PPF format, i.e. Past, Present and Future/ Present, Past,
Future. When talking about the future, connect it to your need for the scholarship to make it
achievable.
E.g.:
Thank you for the opportunity to brief you about myself. My name is …. (if you like), I currently
work as a …., and my work directly impacts the O&G industry in the areas of …. Before now, I
had my bachelor’s degree in …. The choice for my education stemmed from …. And ever since,
my passion in the subject has waxed stronger. While working as a …. I discovered a gap in the
O&G sector, and this has been my major motivation for pursuing a master’s education in that
subject area. I am confident that with this education, I can return to Nigeria profess a solution. The
PTDF scholarship will present me an opportunity to achieve these lofty goals of mine through
access to funding for my education. I look forward to a symbiotic relationship with PTDF where I
achieve my educational and career goals while emerging as a brilliant investment in the capacity
building of the O&G industry of Nigeria…
[If asked to deliver your SOP, throw key elements of your SOP… this will depend on your SOP]

Motivation Question Answer Tip:

This category of questions aims to scrutinize your motives for applying. You want to be composed
and sound like one with a plan. You want to be clear and concise.
Advice: Identify links between your history and your ambitions, then link it to relevance in the
O&G of Nigeria. If you are referencing an experience, let it follow the STAR or CAR outline
[Situation, Task, Action, Result or Circumstance, Action, Result]
E.g.:

5|Page
During my undergraduate studies, particularly during my final project, I discovered that 75%
percent of potent reservoirs in Nigeria were gas reservoirs. Gas is good as it is relatively cleaner
than oil. However, the complexities of producing and storing gas require advanced knowledge.
Nigeria could be the top producer and supplier of gas in the world if the right technical environment
is provided. The passion to avail the required know-how to Nigeria by a Nigerian is my motivation
for a master’s degree in Natural Gas Engineering at Herriot Watt University. The university
recently opened the ___ research laboratory dedicated to the liquefaction of Natural gas through
the process of …. I am confident of being able to use this facility to my advantage and deliver the
much-needed solution to the Nigerian O&G.

Target Question Answer Tip:

This category wants to ensure you have a clear plan about what you intend to do after your MSc.
This must include returning to Nigeria.
You want to be clear, and serious here. The interviewers may want to test you by joking with the
slang “Japa”. Don’t fall for it. Don’t smile. Show seriousness about your plans.
Advice: Include the phrase “when I return” as many times as you can. Let your plans follow the
SMART outline. [Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound]

E.g.:
Upon return to Nigeria, I will pitch my research to potential investors. It from findings, one third
of IOCs in Nigeria regularly advertise proposals for solution to the gas problems which has not
been met. Since my research offers the much-demanded solution, I expect realization of my
proposed project to get underway within 8 months of my return. This would translate to me being
the project consultant for the implementation of the gas solution.
In the longer term, I plan to establish an organization that will focus on creating development plans
for potential investors… etc.

Oversea Question Answer Tip:

This part is to assess your interests abroad. To these questions, they expect lots of cliché answers.
You want to make sure you win their hearts here by being unique. This is your opportunity to show
them you think differently.
Advice: Be real. You can give statistics but don’t go out pouring everything you crammed. Slow
down and let them see you have genuine points.
E.g.:

6|Page
 You spoke with distinguished alumni of the school, and they gave honest experiences that
you had to weigh against other options.
 You found modules that align with your ambitions upon return to Nigeria. (you can
mention them)
 You engaged your potential project supervisor, and he wants you to join him in the
research.
 Modules in Nigeria don’t directly address the issue at the heart of your research.
 The country has the offers priority internships to international students in your area of
study, which means your study will be smooth and swift.
 Etc.…

Surprise Question Answer Tip:

For this part just stick to your truths. Know what you want.
Advice: Know your SOP, your vice chancellor, why your company won’t sponsor you and other
things you should know.
E.g.:

 You want the fully funded OSS because it gives you the opportunity to focus fully on your
study with no need to work to sustain you or pay tuition.
 Your company only sponsors developmental courses and certifications as an extended
degree program is not within the scope of their developmental program.
 Were your application denied, you will look for other funding opportunities to fulfil your
ambition (if that is the case with you).

Final Question Answer Tip:

This is another part where they expect cliché. Try to stand out from the crowd.
Advice: This is another opportunity for you to shine. Ask them questions that will make them talk
and talk. Technical or intelligent.
E.g.:
What milestone projects have returnee scholars of the OSS proposed which have been adopted or
implemented in Nigeria, as you will be needing them for an inspiration when you return with
yours?

PART II
This part of the document discussed about the potential interview questions you may likely come
across for the Petroleum Trust Development Fund’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme. In addition,
Haruna shared some generic interview questions you may come across in other scholarship
interviews. It is important to note that, these questions are developed based on his personal
interview experience and as an awardee of the same scholarship. Therefore, this cannot serve as a
cheat code or exact interview questions from PTDF.

This part of the document is structured in the following. First, technical interview questions.
Second, scholarship requirements and career related questions. And, finally, generic interview
questions.

Technical Interview Questions:

Q. In 2-3 minutes, tell us about your research

Ans: Here, you have to go straight to the point and your discussion should be devoid of
vague and abstract terms that will confuse the panel. Additionally, you should speak
clearly, concisely, and excellently.

For example, if I were to answer this question, I would say:

Thank you for your question. I studied Engineering for my undergraduate degree and
currently work as a Field Engineer. My research proposal is shaped by recent industry
trends that leverage emerging technologies to optimize petroleum production. Specifically,
I aim to apply machine learning techniques to analyze the production history of oil wells
in XYZ fields. By identifying patterns and bottlenecks that hinder optimal production, I
plan to develop a case study that can guide researchers, industry practitioners, and students
on the application of machine learning in petroleum production engineering.

While this example focuses on machine learning and engineering, prospective scholars
from other disciplines can follow a similar approach. They can distill their research ideas
into fundamental concepts, making it easier for others to understand their plans and the
potential impact if they receive the scholarship.

Q. Can tell us the gaps in the research literature?

Ans: When answering this type of question, the panelists are not expecting you to list the
names of scholars, the number of publications, or narrate the stories of the best papers
you've read. Instead, they want to hear about clear trends and sequences of events in the
industry, along with the latest research breakthroughs and innovations.

9|Page
In some cases, presenting a literature sequence in table form can help the panel understand
how you plan to contribute to current industry and research trends in your desired PhD
area.
PhD studies are all about novelty, so it’s crucial to articulate your potential contributions
clearly, even if you are uncertain about how to execute some tasks. Acknowledge that you
don’t know everything and emphasize your readiness to address any knowledge gaps. This
demonstrates not only a commitment to continuous learning but also a growth mindset,
which is essential for a successful PhD journey.

Q. Your source of data and methodology:

Ans: From my observations, panelists often ask about your data sources and methodology.
This is a crucial area where standout scholars can make a significant impact. If you have a
clear understanding of where to source your data and your methodology, you are already a
step closer to being awarded the scholarship.

My message here is to ensure you have a strong grasp of your methodology. Know how
you will transition from one process to another, step by step, and how you will utilize tools
like research software and data to achieve your research aims and objectives. Do not be
afraid to speak with confidence. And, as I mentioned before, always acknowledge any
mistakes or errors where necessary. This demonstrates both your readiness to learn and
your growth mindset.

Q. Why this school?

Ans: In this type of interview, it's advantageous to inform the panelists that you have
already established email communication with a potential supervisor. Mention that you
chose this supervisor because of their expertise in the field and their special interest in
research related to African countries, particularly Nigeria.

By doing this, you send a positive signal to the panel that you are committed to contributing
research solutions specifically to Nigeria, ensuring that the PTDF’s investment will directly
benefit the country. This approach can help you score more points in the interview.

Q. Aims and Objectives of your research:

Ans: When answering this type of question, go straight to listing your aims and objectives.
Ensure they are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. In other words, your aims
and objectives should not overlap. This clarity will help the panelists understand how well-
defined and strong your PhD proposal is.

10 | P a g e
Non-Technical Questions:

Q: What do you want this scholarship?

Ans: In this type of question, the panel wants to hear your personal story. However,
remember that they are familiar with various narratives of hardship, financial instability,
and overcoming challenges. Everyone has a unique story to tell, so there's no need to
replicate someone else's experiences. Be authentic and original.

Share where you are coming from, where you are now, and how the PTDF scholarship can
serve as a bridge to achieving your career goals. If time allows, discuss how you plan to
utilize the scholarship to reach your objectives and network with leading experts in your
field.

Q: Tell us your career plans:

Ans: You can structure your plans into short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals. Be
honest and share realistic, achievable objectives. Avoid discussing ideas or products that
are impractical or impossible to realize.

After your PhD, what’s next? Tailor your answers to focus on contributing to developments
in Nigeria, especially in the oil and gas industry. This approach demonstrates your
commitment to making a meaningful impact in your country.

Q: Should we give you full or partial scholarship?

Ans: When I was asked this question, I smiled because I did not expect it. Nonetheless, I
remained composed and went straight to the point. I informed the panel that I would
appreciate a fully funded scholarship because I cannot afford to fund my PhD degree,
which is financially demanding.

Q: Tell us about yourself:

Ans: Oftentimes, they may ask this question, while in some cases, they will let it slide.
When approaching this question, start with an academic introduction of yourself.
Reintroduce yourself, mention where you completed your bachelor's and master's degrees,
and include your class of degrees and any academic awards. If you are currently working
in an academic environment or industry, include that and relate your current role to oil and
gas practice. Keep it short yet interesting.
