What is an X-ray Machine
An X-ray machine is the machine that involves x-rays. It usually consist of an x-ray generator, and an x-ray
detector.
X-ray machine is widely used in different field:
● Medical - Projectional radiography (conventional radiography), computed tomography (CT Scan),
Radiation therapy (not imaging).
● Airport security
● Revealing counterfeit art
● PCBA Industry.

Introduction of AXI
Automatic optical inspection (AOI) works very well in electronics manufacturing for printed circuit boards when
joints are visible. However many PCBs today are using technologies such as ball grid array, BGA integrated circuits
and chip scale packages, CSPs where the solder connections are not visible.
This has arisen as a result of the need for greater numbers of interconnections to integrated circuit packages and as a
general result of increasing complexity. In these and many other instances it is necessary to carry out checks using
automated X-Ray inspection (AXI) equipment that can check the solder joints under the components, and also reveal
many defects in solder joints that may not be visible with ordinary optical inspection equipment.

X-Ray Inspection
X-ray inspection in the SMT production line
is used to evaluate solder joints and
component structures that are not visible
from the surface. By utilizing X-ray
penetration, the system can detect internal AOI
defects such as voids, insufficient solder,
bridging, or misalignment across all types of
component packages.

Time Delay Integration (TDI) vs Fixed Pixel Matrix (FPD) Scanning
Time Delay Integration (TDI) is a scanning technology in which a Fixed Pixel Matrix (FPD) is a digital X-ray imaging technology in which a
frame transfer device produces a continuous video image of a moving two-dimensional array of detector pixels captures the complete image field in a single
object by means of a stack of linear arrays aligned with and exposure. Each pixel in the array converts the incoming X-ray intensity into an electrical
synchronized to the motion of the object to be imaged in such a way signal through a scintillator-photodiode structure, and the stored charge is sequentially read
that, as the image moves from one line to the next, the integrated charge out via a thin-film transistor (TFT) matrix.
moves along with it, providing higher resolution at lower light levels
than is possible with a line-scan camera. Unlike line-based scanning systems such as TDI, the FPD operates as a fixed-area detector,
capturing a static projection image at once without the need for synchronized motion
between the object and the detector.

How X-ray is Generated
● Electron Emission:
The cathode (a heated tungsten filament) releases electrons
through thermionic emission.
● Acceleration:
A high voltage (kV) is applied between the cathode (–) and
anode (+), accelerating the electrons toward the target.
● Target Interaction:
When the high-speed electrons hit the tungsten target, they
suddenly decelerate.
○ This deceleration produces X-rays (≈1% of energy).
○ The remaining 99% becomes heat.
● X-ray Output:
The generated X-rays pass through the output window and are
