Insulation Material For Arc Furnaces

The document summarizes the composition and properties of mica paper insulation material used for arc furnaces. The insulation consists of multiple layers of muscovite mica paper impregnated with silicone binder. Mica is described as a mineral that can be cleaved into very thin, flexible sheets that have high electrical resistance and temperature resistance. The mica paper insulation is well-suited for applications requiring high voltage resistance at high temperatures, such as insulating electrode arms in arc furnaces. Key properties discussed include the material's high temperature resistance, compressive strength, dielectric strength, and resistance to chemicals and heat.

Introducing

The Insulating Material for Arc Furnaces

Composition
Insulation material for arc furnaces consists of several layers of MUSCOVITE (A colorless or pale brown mica with potassium) MICA PAPER impregnated with silicone binder.

What Is MICA?
Any of various minerals consisting of hydrous silicates of aluminum or potassium etc. that crystallize in forms that allow perfect cleavage into very thin leaves; used as dielectrics because of their resistance to electricity.

What Is MICA? Any of various minerals consisting of hydrous silicates of aluminum or potassium etc. that crystallize in forms that allow perfect cleavage into very thin leaves; used as dielectrics because of their resistance to electricity. MICA has exceptional physical properties: - High temperature resistance, - Non-flammability, - High dielectric strength, - High compressive strength and high modulus of elasticity, - Low water absorption, - Resistance to most chemicals and Mineral oil products

Applications

Insulation of electrode arm and holder in arc and ladle furnaces.

Applications requiring high voltage resistance at high temperatures.

Preventive Measures
1. CLEAN INSULATION THOROUGHLY 2. INSPECT THE INSULATION. THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY PHYSICAL DAMAGES. REPLACE IF ANY FAULTY PART IS FOUND. 3. CHECK THE INSULATION RESISTANCE VALUES OF THE INSULATION. THE INSULATION VALUES TO BE CHECKED BETWEEN INSULATED PART & LIVE PART. 4. THE TEST VOLTAGE HAS TO BE > (2 x WORKING VOLTAGE +1000V) AND MORE THAN 3000V. THE MEASURED RESISTANCE HAS TO BE > 3.8 M. THE TEST DURATION HAS TO BE 1MIN.
