Stress, Frustration and Conflict

Frustration occurs when something blocks us from achieving our goals. There are several types of conflicts that can arise: approach-approach, where we must choose between two desirable options; avoidance-avoidance, where we must choose between two undesirable options; approach-avoidance, where an option has both good and bad aspects; and double approach-avoidance, where both options have pros and cons. Stress is the physical reaction our bodies have to demands or changes and can be either positive (eustress) or negative (distress) depending on the situation. There are organizational and individual techniques that can help reduce and manage stress.

Choosing between two or more undesirable options Would I rather be late to college and get a detention , or skip college and get behind in my classes?

Approach- avoidance conflict


A choice involving a situation with both good and bad features Should I go to the scary movie with my friends? It would be fun, but then I wont be able to sleep tonight

Double approach- avoidance conflict


A choice between alternatives, both of which have good and bad parts Should I major in law (lots of school, lot of studying, but will make lots of money) or social work (less school, helping people, rewarding, but make less money)

Step 1: take responsibility for dealing with conflict Step 2: uncover define and discuss the real problem Step 3: ask questions and listen! Step4: set goals and create an action plan Step5: Follow up

Eustress
Positive stress that leads to something desirable Job promotion Eustress is good because it keeps us moving towards a goal

Distress
Bad stress that is overwhelming, block goals, or that causes problems Being fired from a job Loss of a family member Bankruptcy

Fight-or -fight response


The bodys response to crisis Higher brain recognizes threat or stress Lower brain secretes stress hormone ( adrenaline) which speeds up heart, tenses muscles, and shuts down digestive system

Treating stress in the work place


Organizational techniques: provide sufficient support for change Provide sense of control through participation Clearly define employee roles Eliminate work over and under load EAPs for stress reduction ( teach coping strategies) Provide opportunity for social support
