From Pupil to Student
Taking responsibility
Are you a Studentyet?
In
elementary school, those attending class are called pupils At RHS, we want you to become students What is the difference?
The pupil
The pupil
Must
attend school (not the pupils own choice) Does not have much influence Has limited responsibility for learning Do what you are told!
The Student
The
student
chosen to attend school
Has
Is given influence, and should use it Is responsible for learning Think about what you are told!
Being a student is about your attitude towards taking responsibility
Taking responsibility
The six levels of responsibility
Denial (lowest level) Lay Blame Justify Shame Obligation Responsibility (highest level)
Denial
Did you prepare for today? I told you to do some assignme nts What? We didnt have to prepare for today No you didnt!
DEnial
At the Denial level, you
Deny everything that you have not been explicitly informed about Do not take any initiative for finding information on your own Do not assume ownership for learning
Lay blame
Did you prepare for today? You can see it on the website What? You didnt tell us what to prepare for today! Butmy mom had borrowed my computer!
Lay Blame
At the Lay Blame level, you
Blame others for hindering you in doing what you are supposed to do Claim that It is not my fault! Do not assume ownership for learning
JUstify
Did you prepare for today? You had all week to prepare Nobut it was so hot yester-day, and I had a headache I know, but I had to go to a party on saturday
Justify
At the Justify level, you
Blame external factors for hindering you in doing what you are supposed to do Claim that It is not my fault! Do not assume ownership for learning
SHAME
Did you prepare for today? You could ask a fellow student for help NoIm sorry. I guess Im just too stupid I know, but it would probably not help me anyway
SHAME
At the Shame level, you
Start to assume ownership for learning Blame yourself for hindering you in doing what you are supposed to do Tend to give up easily (Im probably just too stupid for this)
Obligation
Did you prepare for today? Good ! Yes, I have prepared for today and those assigments were so confusing, but (sigh) I have to do them
Obligation
At the Obligation level, you
Assume ownership for learning Do what you are supposed to do but not really because you want to, but because you have to! Still have a get it done, so I can do something more fun attitude
Responsibility
Did you prepare for today? Good ! Grea t! Yes, I have prepared for today And I have some questions for assignment 4
Responsibility
At the Responsibility level, you
Assume full ownership for learning Do what you are supposed to do, because you want to do it May even go beyond what you are supposed to do, simply because you are curious and want to learn more
Responsibility
The responsibility for making sure that I learn something lies with
YOU!

Old-fashioned
lectures only take up about 20 % of the total time you need to devote! You will not learn enough just by hearing lectures, and doing nothing else! Expect to use as much time to self-study, as you use at the school! Otherwise, you will remain a pupil
