Alcoholism Addiction to alcohol or abuse of alcohol to a degree that produces problems in one or more of these areas:

Health Social relationships Economic status Interpersonal relationships

Conditions of Alcoholism
Consumption of large quantities over an extended

period. Psychological dependence Physical addiction Alcohol-related problems

What Causes Alcoholism?

Alcoholism is caused by a combination of genetic,

environmental, biological, and psychological factors. Alcoholism often runs in families. This is partially due to genetic factors. Although genetics is involved in many cases of alcoholism, children of alcoholic parents do not necessarily become alcoholic. In addition, people with no family history of the disease can develop alcoholism.

Environmental factors also may affect drinking and the

development of alcohol abuse and alcoholism.


They include:

1. Influence of family and friends; 2. Cultural attitudes and practices; 3. Ease of obtaining alcohol; and 4. Stress

Why People Start Drinking


Peer pressure
Need to belong and be accepted Easy access (often at home)

Absence of religious attachment


Cultural / sociological traditions Makes one "feel good"

Symptoms of alcoholism
Drinking alone and in secret. Not being able to limit how much alcohol is consumed. Blacking out - not being able to remember chunks of

time. Feeling an urge to drink. Requiring a larger quantity of alcohol to feel its effect. Nausea, sweating, or even shaking when not drinking.

Short-Term Effects Of Alcohol


BRAIN Alcohol can reach the brain in a short amount of time and the brains ability to control the body is greatly affected. Fine motor skills, speech, and vision may be affected.

HEART Alcohol causes the heart rate to increase and the blood vessels to expand. Due to the expanded blood vessels, blood is circulated closer to the outer most layer of skin, allowing the bodys heat to escape easier.

LIVER The liver is the organ that processes the alcohol in the body and turns it back into water and carbon dioxide. When more alcohol is consumed faster than the liver can handle, the alcohol continues to circulate the blood stream causing intoxication.

Alcohol can affect a persons

judgment and may interfere with a persons ability to control decisions, behavior and emotions.
Drinking & Driving: Alcohol reduces a persons ability to judge distances, speeds, and turns. Makes a person take risks they normally would not.

Long-Term Effects Of Alcohol


Long-term excessive use of alcohol

can lead to severe brain damage. Moderate drinking can result in the loss of brain cells. Loss of brain cells can cause impairment of intellectual abilities like memory and problem solving.

Controlling alcohol use & abuse


Rehablitation centre and Counseling -

A qualified counselor can help the alcoholic talk through his/her problems and then devise a plan to tackle the drinking. Prohibition Age limit Increasing the age at which alcohol can be purchased, the banning or restricting advertising of alcohol
