Engineering Fluid Dynamics Tool

AFT Fathom is engineering software used to model steady state liquid and low pressure gas systems to calculate pressure drops and velocities. It can be used to model systems like water distribution, crude transfer, fire water, and cooling water. Some key features include pipe sizing, pump selection and sizing, NPSH evaluation, and troubleshooting existing systems. Inputs required include piping diagrams, pump curves, equipment data sheets, and process parameters. The software has five main windows for inputs, outputs, and results. An example is provided on how to size a pump using the software by starting Fathom, laying out the model, defining components, running the solver, and reviewing outputs.

What is AFT Fathom?

AFT (Applied Flow Technology) Fathom is an engineering software used to
model steady state liquid hydraulics system and low pressure gases to
calculate pressure drop and velocity in the flow path, such as:

Water distribution system

Crude transfer system
Fire water system
Slurry transfer
Cooling water system, etc

For steady state hydraulics system, other software and tools available are:
MES liquid hydraulics spreadsheet
Stoner Pipeline Simulator
Hysys, etc

Other Products of AFT are:

AFT Impulse Liquid Transient Analysis
AFT Arrow Gas Steady State Modeling

Other features of AFT Fathom

The software is very useful for:
Pipe Sizing
Pump (Centrifugal and Positive Displacement) sizing and Selection
NPSH evaluation
Variable speed pumping
Impeller trimming
Viscosity corrections using standards from the Hydraulic Institute
Wire-to-water efficiency calculation including pump, motor and variable frequency drive efficiencies
Power usage and motor sizing
Energy cost calculation
Control Valve sizing and Selection
Simulating System operation and component interaction
Evaluating heat transfer in pipes and heat exchangers
Troubleshooting existing systems to determine the cause of operational problems
Advanced hydraulic solver using Newton-Raphson matrix methods
Scenario Manager to track all design variants and operational possibilities in a single model file with data linkage
Integrated graphing and reporting
Conduct thermal analysis including piping heat transfer and heat exchanger modeling
Calculate the costs of pipes and other components
Supports Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
Address viscosity and frictional changes associated with pumping non-settling solids
Built-in library of fluids and fittings can be extended and customized

What are inputs for AFT Fathom Modeling?
