#4. X is known as "checkers" in the United States. There
are many variations on the board size, the most
commonly used being 7×6, followed by 8×7, 9×7, and
10×7. The game was solved mathematically by James D.
Allen (1 October 1988), and independently by Victor
Allis (16 October 1988). With perfect play, the first
player can force a win by starting in the middle column.
By starting in the two adjacent columns, the first player
allows the second player to reach a draw; by starting
with the four outer columns, the first player allows the
second player to force a win. Broadcaster and
writer Stuart Maconie – while working at the NME –
started a rumour that X was invented by David Bowie,
which became an urban myth.ID the game X.

8. The term originates from Stephen Potter‘s humorous 1947 book, The Theory
and Practice of X. Stephen Potter cites the origin of X to be a tennis match in
which he and the philosopher C. E. M. Joad competed against two younger and
fitter men who were outplaying them fairly comfortably. On returning a serve,
Joad hit the ball straight into the back-netting twelve feet behind the back-line.
While the opponents were preparing for the next serve Joad queried whether
the ball had landed in, or out. Being young, polite university students, their
opponents offered to replay the point, but Joad declined. Because they were
young and polite, the slight suggestion by Joad that their etiquette was in
question was extremely off-putting. Potter and Joad went on to win the match.
The most common techniques of X are the following.
• Breaking the flow of an opponent's play.
• Causing an opponent to take the game less seriously or to overthink his or her
position.
• Intentionally making a "mistake" which gains an advantage over an opponent.

#13. Heading of the The Morning Post written by Y(1925)
"The Scapegoat of Cricket". He wrote, Poor old X! It has been
subjected to ridicule, abuse, contempt, incredulity, and survived
them all. Deficiencies existing at the present day are attributed to
the influence of the X. If the standard of bowling falls off it is
because too many cricketers devote their time to trying to master
it... it is said that the X has made it impossible for them to attempt
the old aggressive attitude and make the scoring strokes…
As to the birth of the X,Y wrote: Somewhere about the year 1897
I was playing a game with a tennis ball, known as `Twisti-Twosti.'
The object was to bounce the ball on a table so that your opponent
sitting opposite could not catch it... After a little experimenting I
managed to pitch the ball which broke in a certain direction; then
with more or less the same delivery make the next ball go in the
opposite direction! I practised the same thing with a soft ball at
`Stump-cricket.' From this I progressed to the cricket ball…
