– an overview

 Think of writing as a process: a set of activities you go


through to produce a finished product.
 This process has three distinct stages:
1) Planning and Shaping
2) Drafting
3) Revising and Editing

Planning and Shaping
 Find a focus that fits your purpose and audience before
you start.
 Gather ideas:
 Keep a journal.
 Brainstorm or jot down lists of ideas.
 Free writing - let your mind go.
 Mind mapping / idea trees.

 Outlining

Drafting

 Getting your ideas into visible form:


 Prioritize your ideas.
 Write complete sentences.
 Divide text into paragraphs.
 Organize paragraphs into Introduction, Body and Close.

 Large-scale changes: adding text, cutting, replacing


words/phrases, rearranging parts.
 Editing: checking the correctness of grammar, spelling,
punctuation and mechanics.

 Think about your subject before you begin to write
 Use prewriting – the stages of thinking and writing in
advance of the draft – to sharpen your tentative thoughts
on a topic
 Prewriting may include jotting ideas, producing a list of
questions, using free association, or making a rough
outline.

 Consider what others think or have thought about your
subject: Read what others have written; talk to friends;
review a film
 Share your draft with readers you trust
 As you revise, slash foggy thinking, cut imprecise words,
and trim wordy sentences

 Observe unity and coherence as you write.
 Unity means that each idea relates to your main point and
the other ideas.
 Coherence means that one idea leads smoothly and
logically to the text.
