Government College of Engineering Dharmapuri: Design and Fabrication of Paper Cutting Using Geneva Mechanism

This document describes the design and fabrication of a paper cutting machine using a Geneva mechanism. The machine uses components like a Geneva wheel, rollers, sprockets and chain, a paper cutter, and a coil spring. It works by converting the continuous motion of a crank into intermittent motion using the Geneva wheel, which moves the paper between the cutter during cutting periods. This allows the machine to accurately cut paper into equal dimensions in less time than manual cutting.

ABSTRACT
The design of paper cutting using Geneva mechanism
is very useful to cut paper in equal and accurate
dimensions.
Geneva drive is an indexing mechanism that converts
the continuous motion into intermittent motion .Due to
the intermittent ,the paper is moved between the time
intervals of cutting period.
Then the paper cutting is achieved by the crank and
lever mechanism. The cutter will be back to its original
position by the spring effect.
This machine is also used to cut the various kind of
paper products , plastics ,thin film , leather .
INTRODUCTION
The paper cutting machine is designed, in order to
reduce the time for marking and cutting the papers.
Geneva mechanism is commonly used indexing
mechanism where an intermittent motion is required.
The fabrication of geneva mechanism is generally
simple and inexpensive.
The paper cutting is done by crank and lever
mechanism The purpose of this machine is to reduce
time for marking the paper.
DESIGN SPECIFICATION
The Geneva Wheel Mechanism designed in this
project has the following design specifications:
Number of Slots = 6
Radius of Crank = 60mm
Outer radius of Geneva Wheel = 150mm
Slot width = 16mm
Length of Slot = 53.2mm
Crank pin diameter = 10mm
Shaft pin diameter = 10mm
Thickness of the base plate = 5mm
Diameter of roller pin = 7.5mm
MAIN COMPONENTS
Geneva wheel

Sprockets and chain

Roller

cutter

Coil spring
GENEVA WHEEL
The Geneva drive or Maltese cross is a
gear mechanism that translates a continuous
rotation into an intermittent rotary motion. The
rotating drive wheel has a pin that reaches into
a slot of the driven wheel advancing it by one
step. The drive wheel also has a raised circular
blocking disc that locks the driven wheel in
position between steps.
Rollers
Rollers means a cylinder that rotates about a
central axis and is used in various machines and device
to move, flatten or spread something. The two types of
rollers used in conveyor are driving and driven roller.
Driving rollers are rollers or cylinders upon which
something is rolled along. The material of driven roller
should be softer than driving roller.
SPROCKET AND CHAIN
A sprocket or sprocket-wheel is a profiled
wheel with teeth, cogs, or even sprockets that mesh with
a chain, track or other perforated or indented material.
The name 'sprocket' applies generally to any wheel upon
which radial projections engage a chain passing over it.
It is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are
never meshed together directly, and differs from a
pulley in that sprockets have teeth and pulleys are
smooth. It is used to transmit rotary motions between
two shafts
PAPER CUTTER
A paper cutter is a tool, designed to cut
the paper with a straight edge. Paper cutters vary
in size. This paper cutter is used as the oscillator
in the four bar crank and lever mechanism.
COIL SPRING
A coil spring, also known as a helical
spring, is a mechanical element, which is
typically used to store energy and subsequently
release it. This coil spring is used to bring the
cutter to its original position.
PROJECT PHOTOGRAPH
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The handle is fixed to the crank (sprocket). If the
handle is rotated,
1. When the cam pin is in extreme right position i.e.
engage position, the crank shaft will be at
extreme bottom position. Hence the cutter is in
full open position and the spring will be in rest
position.
2. When the cam pin is in extreme bottom position
i.e. disengage position, the crank shaft will be at
extreme left position. Hence the cutter is in
partial cutting position and the spring will be in
partial tension..
3.When the cam pin is in extreme left position i.e.
disengage position, the crank shaft will be at extreme
top position. Hence the cutter is in full cutting position
and spring will be in full tension.
4.When the cam pin is in extreme top position i.e.
disengage position, the crank shaft will be at extreme
right position. Hence the cutter is in partial cutting
position and the spring will be in partial tension. Thus
the paper cutting is achieved by the above four process
of the Geneva and cutter .
COST ESTIMATION
CONCLUSION
The design and fabrication of paper cutting
machine using geneva mechanism is will be very
much useful in small scale industries . There are
many machines based on paper cutting but it has
some demerits like large in size ,costly ,need skilled
people to operate. But our machine will overcome
this demerits by compact in size, less cost ,no need
for skilled people.
The main aim for this machine is to reduce
timing for paper cutting and neglect the time for
marking the paper , this aim is achieved in our paper
cutting machine using geneva mechanism.
