What Is A Domain Controller

A domain controller (DC) is a server that authenticates users on a Windows domain network. It contains Active Directory (AD), which manages users, computers, groups and other objects, and Group Policy (GP), which sets configuration policies for those objects. Multiple redundant DCs maintain the same AD and GP data for fault tolerance. DCs respond to authentication requests and replicate critical data between each other to manage large computer networks through a single centralized administration.
