Chebyshev's Theorem

Chebyshev's theorem describes how the mean and standard deviation can be used to determine the percentage of observations that fall within a given interval of the mean. It states that for any number k greater than 1, at least 1 - 1/k^2 of the data values will lie within k standard deviations of the mean. For example, if a math test has an average score of 84 with a standard deviation of 4, at least 75% of scores will be between 72 and 96.

chebyshev's

theorem
• chebyshev's theorem will show you how use the mean and
the standard deviation to find the percentage of the total
observations that fall within a given interval about the mean.

• For any number k greater than 1, at least (1−1/k2)

of the data values lie k standard deviations of the mean.
• Important stuff!
Notice that we say that k is greater than 1 or at least 2. k must
be 2 because we get 0 when k = 1.
Example:
Suppose that the average score on a math test is an 84
with a standard deviation of 4 points. According to chebyshev's
theorem, at least what percent of the tests have a grade of at
least 72 and at most 96?
