A heat exchanger is needed to heat 4450 kg/h of benzene from 300K to 322K using hot toluene cooled from 344K to 311K. The specific gravities and a fouling factor are provided. The number of 6m hairpin tubes needed is to be calculated.
The effectiveness-NTU method is introduced to analyze heat exchangers when outlet temperatures are unknown. Effectiveness is defined as the ratio of actual heat transfer to maximum possible heat transfer.
A heat exchanger is used to cool 250kg/h of hot liquid at 393K to an unknown outlet temperature, using 1000kg/h of water at 283K as the coolant. The heat transfer rate,

It is desired to heat 4450 Kg/h of cold benzene
from 300 K to 322 K using hot toluene which is cooled from 344 K to 311 K. The specific gravities of benzene and toluene are 0.88 and 0.87 respectively. A fouling factor of 1.60 X 10-4 m2 K/W should be provided for each stream. A number of 6 m hairpins of 50 by 31.75 mm IPS pipe are available. How many hairpins are required? Effectiveness – NTU method of HTA • Effectiveness – NTU method is used when the temperatures of the fluids leaving the exchanger are not known. • This method is based on the effectiveness of a heat exchanger in transferring a given amount of heat. • For obtaining an expression for the heat transfer rate without involving any of the outlet temperatures, let us introduce the term effectiveness. It is required to cool 250 Kg/h of hot liquid with inlet temperature of 393 K using a parallel flow arrangement. 1000 Kg/h of cooling water is available for cooling purpose at a temperature 283 K. Calculate the outlet temperatures of the hot liquid and water and the effectiveness of the heat exchanger if the overall heat transfer coefficient is 1160 W/m2 K and the heat transfer surface of the exchanger is 0.25 m2. A double-pipe heat exchanger is constructed of a copper (k = 380 W/m · °C) inner tube of internal diameter Di = 1.2 cm and external diameter Do = 1.6 cm and an outer tube of diameter 3.0 cm. The convection heat transfer coefficient is reported to be hi = 700 W/m2 · °C on the inner surface of the tube and ho = 1400 W/m2 · °C on its outer surface. For a fouling factor Rf, i = 0.0005 m2 · °C/W on the tube side and Rf, o = 0.0002 m2 · °C/W on the shell side, determine (a) the thermal resistance of the heat exchanger per unit length and (b) the overall heat transfer coefficients Ui and Uo based on the inner and outer surface areas of the tube, respectively.
