Definition
• An input device is any peripheral (piece of
computer hardware equipment) used to
provide data and control signals to an
information processing system .

• Input and Output devices make up the


hardware interface.
VARIOUS TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES
• KEYBORD – Writing input device
• MOUSE – Pointing input device
• SCANNER – Scanning input device
• MICRO PHONE – Audio input device
• WEBCAM – Image & Video input device
• TOUCH SCREEN – Human Sensitive input

KEYBOARD
KEYBOARD
• The keyboard is a way to input letters or
numbers into different applications or
programs.
• Types of Keys:
• Alphanumeric keys
• Function Keys
• Navigation keys
• Modifier Keys
Mouse
Mouse
• Functions as a pointing device by detecting
2-dimentional motion relative to its
supporting surface.
• Can be used only with GUI based O.S.
Eg.Windows
• Used to navigate, open/close files,websites.
• Main goal is to translate the motion of our
hand into signals that the computet can use.
Joystick
Joystick
• Used to move cursor from place to place, and
click on various items in programs.
• Inputs directional data like a mouse.
• Moves up-down,left-right.
• Mostly used for playing games.
SCANNER
SCANNER
• Used to copy pictures or other things and save
them as files on the computer.
• A light moves slowly over the surface of the
picture or the object to be scanned.
• The colours of the reflected light are detected
and digitised to build up a digital image.
MICROPHONE
MICROPHONE
• A microphone, sometimes colloquially called a mic or
mike, is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor
that converts sound into an electrical signal.
• Microphones are used in many applications such as
telephones, tape recorders, hearing aids, motion
picture production, live and recorded audio
engineering, in radio and television broadcasting and
in computers for recording voice, VOIP(voice over
internet protocol), and for non-acoustic purposes such
as ultrasonic checking.
WEBCAM
WEBCAM
• Mostly used during long distance chatting.
• Webcams typically include a lens, an image
sensor, and some support electronics .
• Video chat is a good example of positive use.
• Internet privacy is the biggest concern of
webcams and a major negative point .
TOUCH SCREEN
TOUCH SCREEN
• A computer display screen sensitive to human
touch.
• Used with information kiosks, computer-
based training devices, and systems designed
to help individuals having difficulty using
mouse/keyboard.
