Go Back, Think, Question, and

Cornell Notes is a note-taking system with four key steps: [1] Take notes in the right column with headings in the left, [2] Go back and highlight important information, [3] Write questions in the left column about each heading, [4] Summarize the key points at the bottom. When taught properly, Cornell Notes can help students learn by segmenting material, identifying main ideas, questioning their understanding, and synthesizing what they've learned.

GO BACK, THINK, QUESTION,

AND SUMMARIZE

Four steps to make Cornell Notes work in your classroom.

Go Back, Think, Question,
and Question

 Cornell Notes can be a powerful study tool when taught

and utilized properly.

 Cornell Notes is a format:

 A systematic way of taking notes
 A guide to help students through their thinking and learning

 Cornell Notes is a set of practices:

 Recording important information for later use in a way that is
meaningful to the student
 Identifying key terms and concepts
 Synthesizing what is learned
 An easy way for teachers to check for understanding.
Anatomy of Cornell Notes

 Take notes in right column.

 Main ideas an questions
on the left.
 Synthesize learning by
summarizing at the
bottom.
4 Steps to Make Cornell Notes Work
Step One:
 When preparing lesson on a
power point, from a book etc, be
mindful about segmenting
material into manageable chunks
and providing or drawing
attention to headings/main idea
titles.
 As the lesson progresses, students
will write the headings/main
ideas notes in the left column.
 Students will record their notes, in
their own words, in the right
column.
A Few Words of Warning
 Discourage students from copying notes
verbatim as this will prevent them from
“owning” their learning.
 Encourage students to use abbreviations
where appropriate.
 Don’t be discouraged if it takes a while; keep
at it and it will get easier.
 Depending on the length of the lesson, notes
could take 1 pages of paper or several. It is
up to you to choose a logical place to
proceed with the following steps.
Step Two: Go Back, Think
 After having taken notes for
the lesson, go back to the
beginning.
 As a class, decide what the
important information is
from each heading/main
idea and highlight it.
 At the beginning this may
take a lot of guidance and
suggestion from the teacher
but students will become
more proficient as time goes
on.
Step Three: Question
 Once important information from each section
is highlighted, it is much easier for students to
determine what the main idea of the section is
(because sometimes the heading/main idea
they have written on the left column isn’t
enough!)
 Students now need to formulate a question
that articulates the main idea of the section.
 It is helpful to think of the left column as the front
of a flashcard and the right as the answer on the
back of the flashcard.
Step Three: Question

 Encourage students
to write level 2 or 3
questions for each
main idea.
 This process may
take a while of
students to do on
their own but don’t
give up!
Step Four: Summarize

 The last section of the

notes is a summary which
enables students to
solidify their knowledge
by putting it into their
own words.
 At first, students may need
guidance to determine
what information should
be included or excluded
from their summaries.
Closing Thoughts
 Cornell Notes, while flexible,
work best when all portions are
properly used.
 You need to decided what to do
when it comes to grading these
notes or not.
 A way to do this is to grade the
questions and/or summaries only.
 While this strategy takes a
certain amount of work, you will
see that the rewards are great!
