CHOOSING THE RIGHT
INFORMATION
RESOURCE
What Kind Of Question Are You Asking?
Background information
General questions (cause, presentation, treatment)
Foreground information
Specific questions regarding a patient (original
research, secondary sources)
Where do you find background information?
Where do you find foreground information?
Background Information = Textbooks
You have limited knowledge on the topic
Common facts or background information
Facts that remain relatively static over time
such as:
the diagnosis of periodontal (gum) diseases
how to perform a oral exam
characteristics of TMD/TMJ
(Temporomandibular Disorders)
anatomy, physiology, descriptive pathology
WHERE DO I FIND THEM?
Where to find online textbooks:
Library Catalog
http://catalog.lhl.uab.edu
Basic Medical Book Collections online:
Access Medicine
MD Consult
http://www.uab.edu/lister/databases
Foreground Info = Journal
You know a little about the topic, but need
specific information about how to manage a
patient with a disorder
Journals
Some are peer reviewed, some are not
Useful for finding new therapies, diagnoses, etc.
Requires a good PICO question!
HOW DO I FIND A JOURNAL ARTICLE?

What is a systematic review?
• A systematic review identifies an intervention or
treatment for a specific disease or other problem in
health care
• Identifies and includes all up-to-date and relevant
studies and trials
• Determines whether or not the intervention or
treatment works
www.thecochranelibrary.com
Why Is This Needed?
Dental research is continuous
Implementation of findings is delayed
Dentists must stay current
Evidence-based practice has been shown to
keep dentists up-to-date
Evidence pyramid
EBD PROCESS
Question
Articulate a clear question
Find
Conduct a comprehensive search
Appraise
Critically assess the evidence
Act
Use the best identified valid and relevant evidence in
patient care
Evaluation
Assess how well the previous steps worked
What is The Cochrane Library?
A collection of databases that include high quality,
independent, reliable evidence from Cochrane and other
systematic reviews, clinical trials and more.
• Brings together research on the effectiveness of healthcare
treatments and interventions from around the world.
• Based on the practice of evidence-based medicine
• Used by clinicians, policy makers, researchers, educators,
students, patients and others.
Evidence-based medicine is “The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current
best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.”
Sackett DL, Rosenberg WMC, Gray JAM, Haynes RB, Richardson WS. (1996)
