Transformations Project

The document defines and provides examples of the four basic types of geometric transformations: translation, reflection, rotation, and their properties. It provides links to interactive resources explaining each transformation in more detail. Transformations involve changing the position of a shape or figure through sliding, flipping, or turning without changing its size or shape. A translation slides the shape along a straight path, reflection creates a mirror image across a line, and rotation spins the shape around a fixed point.

(6) Geometry and measurement.

The student applies mathematical process

standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional
solids to develop generalizations
about their properties.

The student is expected to:

• (D) identify attributes of two-dimensional shapes using informal and formal

geometric language interchangeably;
• Transformation: A change or movement in the points of a shape or figure in a
plane.

• Pre-image is the original shape of the object.

• Image is the final shape and position of the object after the transformation.

• There are three types of transformations: translation, reflection, and rotation.

• A transformation consists of either a flip, slide, turn, or resize in the shape or

object.

figure. It will also provide helpful information to help you
learn more about transformations.

• Translation: is a transformation that slides every
point of the shape or object the same distance in
the same direction.

• The shape or object is not rotated, reflected or

re-sized.
• The link provided below will show you an interactive
reflected figure. It will also provide helpful information to
help you learn more about translations.

• Reflection: A transformation in which a
geometric figure is reflected across a line,
creating a mirror image. That line is called the
axis of reflection (mirror line).

• The mirror line can be in any direction.

reflected figure. It will also provide helpful information
to help you learn more about reflections.

• Rotation: A transformation in which a plane
figure turns around a fixed center point. In
other words, one point on the plane, the
center of rotation, is fixed and everything
else on the plane rotates about that point
by a given angle.
• The link provided below will show you an interactive
reflected figure. It will also provide helpful information
to help you learn more about rotations.
