Zero Energy Building by Amit Kumar Shah

Energy Crisis is drastically increasing in the present world, which I believe can be solved by ZEBs(Zero Energy Buildings) . So, it is my first attempt to give presentation for enlightment amongst new entreprenaurs and students.

TU IOE Purwanchal Campus, Dharan-08, Nepal

Definition and Its Principle

Why do we need ZEB ?

Is it possible?

10 Steps For Construction

Success Stories

How much does it cost?

Conclusion
Zero Energy Building is such a
smart building whose energy
consumption and generation in
yearly basis is equal i.e. net energy
is zero.

Main Principle: Reduce + Produce

 Personal Benefit:
Once built, the investment you
have in building ZEB can be
recovered within 15-20 years
simply by not paying for
electricity to NEA. Then, you and
even your generation will not have
to pay a for electricity.
Impersonal Benefit
To maintain Energy Crisis.
To live sustainably & contribute to our planet.

Ans: In long term, ofcourse
it is.

1. Building Orientation : E-W, sun facing roof
2. Simple Design: limit cost
3. Window Orientation: South facing, E & W limited
4. Thermal mass: Concrete type in ground & roof
5. Tight building envelope: Reduces heat exchange
rate, air conditioning cost.
6. Balanced insulation & ventilation : keep moderate
temperature, pure air respiration.
7. Heating & Cooling Equipment : Heat pumps, solar
heater : heat and cool water, air conditioning
8. Efficient appliances : Machineries, solar panels,
battery storages
9. Efficient lighting: Motion sensor lights, led lights
10. Alternative energy: Solar, Wind.

Nepal’s TU CES(Center for Energy Studies) Zero
Energy Building
1. 6.5 KW Solar Photo Voltaic(PV) System
installed in 2002AD.
2. Can generate 27KWh
energy for 4.15hrs of direct
sunlight a day.
3. Building walls fitted with
thermocouple Insulation.
4. Has Solar Water System
and Solar Kitchen.
5. Earth Air Tunnel System.
6. Duration of Project:5 years
Cost Around Rs.60,000,00.

 According to 24hplans.com,”Every year, net zero
homes are built across North America at costs
10% higher than ordinary homes.”

 PV Array probably cost $12000 to $15000 and

some other measures would add $10000 to
$15000 to construction costs.

 Furthermore, it depends on what facilities you

want to have and of course the size of building
and many other factors(discussed earlier)
 ZEB is environment friendly house, which
consumes zero net energy in yearly basis.
 Only one ZEB in Nepal till date i.e. TU CES
building, Pulchowk.
 Must be promoted and added more.
 My Expectation from all of you:
“At least, An Electrical Engineer’s building must be
Zero Energy Building.”
