A B C Components of A Computer System

This document defines the key components of a computer system including hardware, software, input devices, storage devices, and output devices. It describes hardware as the physical parts of a computer like the processor, storage, and peripheral devices. Input devices allow data to enter the computer, storage devices store data, and output devices allow the computer to display information. The document also defines systems software that controls hardware and application software that performs tasks. It provides examples of different types of each.

F451 Components of a Computer System 1

Objectives

 At the end of the lesson you should be

able to :-
a)define the terms: hardware, software,
input device, storage device and
output device
b) describe the purpose of input devices,
storage devices and output devices
c) describe the different roles and
functions of systems software and
applications packages.

Hardware Definitions

 Hardware.
 This is the physical part of a computer
system - the processor(s), storage,
input and output devices.
 Peripheral device.
 Is a piece of equipment (or hardware)
which is outside the computer processor.
 They are connected to the computer via
cables
 They are used to provide input, output
and backing storage for the computer
system.

 Input device.
 Is a peripheral that allows data to be
transmitted to the computer processor.
 Storage device.
 Is a peripheral that allows the user to
store data in an electronic form for a
longer period of time and when the
computer is switched off.
 The data can only be read by the computer
and is not in human-readable form.

4
 Output device.
 Is a peripheral that allows the computer processor
to convey information or the results of its
processing.

Computer System

One way of attempting to describe

computer systems is to break the system
down into 4 parts.

Processing

 Once data has arrived inside the

computer, it is 'processed' by a
special unit called the CPU or Central
Processing Unit.
 This means that software will take
the data, manipulate (or 'process') it
and then may possibly store it for
later use or output it to the outside
world.

Software Definitions

 Software.
 Software is a set of instructions which
makes the computer system do
something useful.
 These sets of instructions are collected
together in workable groups known as
programs.

Different types of Software
 Two types
 Systems Software
 Set of instructions that control the
hardware of the computer.
 Application Software
 Set of instructions designed to make the
computer carry out some useful task.
