Gigabit Passive Optical Networks
GPON Fundamentals
GPON Gigabit Passive Optical Networks.
GPON is defined by ITU-T recommendation series G.984.1 through G.984.6.
GPON network consists of mainly two active transmission equipments, namely-
Optical Line Termination (OLT) and
Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Termination (ONT).
GPON is designed to provide triple-play services (data, video, and voice).
GPON supports high-bandwidth, long reach (upto 20km), etc.
GPON’s higher line speed, greater split ratios, and support for triple-play services combine to
offer maximum flexibility and cost advantages for service provider deployments.
Advantages of GPON Networks
The advantage of PON networks generally is that a single shared optical fiber
can support multiple users through the use of passive optical splitters. In
GPON networks, up to 128 ONTs can share one fiber connection to the OLT.
Other advantages and features of GPON networks include:
Standardized by ITU-T G.984 (Class B+).
Operates at 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244 Gbps upstream.
Practical fiber split ratios up to 1:64 (standard supports up to 1:128)
The downstream channel is broadcast to all ONTs. The upstream channel
uses time division multiplexing .
Distance between OLT and ONT/ONU can be up to 20 km.
GPON specifies QoS and management protocols required for triple-play
services over the network.
No active equipment in the access network, preventing problems from
electromagnetic interference or lightning.
Reduced equipment and fiber at the central office.
GPON - Gigabit Passive Optical Networks
GPON uses optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) so a single
fiber can be used for both downstream and upstream data.
GPON consists of 3 basic components
1. Optical Line Termination (OLT)
2. Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Termination (ONT).
3. Passive Optical Splitter
Downstream (i.e. from OLT to ONU), data packets are transmitted in an
broadcast manner, using encryption (AES) Advanced Encryption Standard.
Wavelength 1490nm
Upstream (i.e. from ONU to OLT), data packets are transmitted in a TDMA
manner.
Wavelength 1310nm

OLT Configuration
1. Set Login Username password/Enable Password/Clock/Hostname/Telent or SSH for
login.
2. Configure ACL to restrict IP base login.(allow specific ips )?
3. Configure All Uplink/PON port with proper descriptions as per the Areas decided.
4. Configure Specific vlans on trunk & PON port of OLT uplink as given by NOC.(do not pass
all vlans).
5. Configure all PON ports(customer ONT port with proper description & Vlan). Configure
broadcast control and loop detection commands on all Remote PON ONT’s.
6. Vlans to be passed on ONT as per the requirement while configuration on the ONT
(PPPoE/Mactal)
7. We need to configure each ONT with logical ports and pass vlan accordingly to make it
work.
