• India is also one of the largest waste generating countries and
per capita waste generation is increasing by 1.3% per annum.
• With 3- 3.5% increasing in urban population per annum, waste
generation is also increasing around 5% annually.
• India produces more than 42.0 million tons of municipal solid
waste annually and per capita generation of waste varies from
200 gm to 600 gm per capita / day with an average generation
rate at 0.4 kg per capita per day in 0.1 million plus towns.

Big agenda for the country
• Understanding the importance and priority of the matter, Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, launched the ambitious 'Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan' (Clean India Mission) on 2nd October 2014.
• The 'Abhiyan' was launched on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's
145th birth anniversary and the mission is mainly aims to mobilize
masses and seeks to create a clean India within a reasonable time
• Should involve Governments, every segment of the society and every
individual.

Waste Management Technologies (WMT)
Program of DST
• Aligned to “Swachh Bharat Mission” or “Clean India Mission” of the
Government.
• Initiated in 2015: Develop material recycling systems with low environment
loading or find better alternatives.
• Objectives
• Develop technologies for small & medium scale enterprises to improve
competitiveness.
• Establish techno-economic feasibility

development programs in this area.
