Inverse Function

The document summarizes information about inverse functions. It provides examples of inverse functions f(x) and g(x), where g(x) is the inverse of f(x). It explains that for a function to have an inverse, it must be one-to-one. A function is one-to-one if it passes both the horizontal line test and algebraic manipulation test: no two inputs can map to the same output. To find the inverse of a function f(x), interchange x and y and solve for y in terms of x.

Consider the function below.

𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟑
1. Find the corresponding y-values of the function f given the
values of x. Tabulate the result in a table like the one below.
f(x) x 0 1 2 3 4
y
2. Using the y-values in number 1 as the x-values of another
𝒙+𝟑
function g 𝒙 = , make a table of values for the function

An INVERSE FUNCTION is
a function that reverses
another function.

It is denoted by −1
𝑓 , called
inverse of function f.
f(x) x 0 1 2 3 4
y -3 1 5 9 13

g(x) x -3 1 5 9 13
y 0 1 2 3 4

The functions f(x) and g(x) are inverses of one

another if the domain of f(x) is the range of g(x),
and the range of f(x) is the domain of g(x).
𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟒, 𝟑 , 𝟓, 𝟏 , (−𝟐, 𝟕)

−𝟏
𝒇 (𝒙) = 𝟑, 𝟒 , 𝟏, 𝟓 , (𝟕, −𝟐)
f(x) x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 4 1 0 1 4

g(x) x 4 1 0 1 4
y -2 -1 0 1 2

Is g(x) a function?

A function has an inverse
function if and only if it is a
one-to-one function.
1. Algebra Manipulation
If you substitute both positive and negative of a
number to a function and gives a unique answer then it is
one-to-one.
Example: f(x) = 2x +1

Let x = 2. Let x = -2.

f(x) = 2x +1 f(x) = 2x +1
f(2) = 2(2) +1 f(-2) = 2(-2) +1
f(2) = 4 +1 f(-2) = -4 +1
f(2) = 5 f(-2) = -3
2. Horizontal Line Test
If a horizontal line intersects a function’s graph more
than once, then the function is NOT one-to-one.
STEPS:
1. Let y = f(x).
2. Interchange x and y, and get x = f(y).
3. Solve for y in terms of x.
4. Write the solution as y = 𝑓 (x)
−1
SEATWORK:
Find the inverse of the following functions.

1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 5𝑥 4. 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 2
2. 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 5 5. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + 3
2
2𝑥
3. 𝑓 𝑥 = 3 − 5
