Transistor

A transistor is a semiconductor device that can amplify or switch electronic signals and power. It has three terminals - an emitter that emits electrons, a base that controls the flow of electrons, and a collector that collects electrons. There are two main types: NPN transistors where the current flows from negative to positive to negative terminals, and PNP transistors where the current flows from positive to negative to positive terminals. Transistors were invented in 1947 by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley and can function as either current amplifiers or binary switches.

TRANSISTOR

- is a semiconductor device
used to amplify and switch
electronic signals and electrical
power.
- which provides oscillation,
amplification, switching and
rectification of electric current.
3 Terminal Semiconductor Device
1.) Emitter - Emits electron
- Low resistance

2.) Base - Flow of electron

3.) Collector - Collects electron

- High resistance
2 Kinds of Transistor

1.) NPN
- Negative – Positive – Negative

2.) PNP
- Positive – Negative – Positive
Transistor Invented by:
1.) John Bardeen

2.) Walter Brattain

3.) William Shockley

In 1947
What is the Difference between
NPN & PNP Transistor?
- Is in their internal
structure and the direction
of the electrical current
flows.
What is the Function of
Transistor?
- Transistor function as
current amplifiers or binary
switches.
Common Types of Transistor
1.) Bipolar Junction Transistors
-are transistors which are made up of 3 regions, the base,
the collector, and the emitter.

2.) Field Effect Transistors

- are transistors which are made up of 3 regions, a gate, a
source, and a drain.
Types of Transistors by Function
1.) Small Signal Transistors
- are transistors that are used primarily to
amplify low-level signals but can also
function well as switches.

2.) Small Switching Transistors

- are transistors that are used primarily as
switches but which can also be used as
amplifiers.
3.) Power transistors (Germanium)
- are suited for applications where a lot
of power is being used- current and
voltage.

4.) High Frequency Transistors

- are transistors that are used for small

signals that run at high frequencies for
high-speed switching applications.
5.) Phototransistors
- are light-sensitive transistors.
A common type of phototransistor
resembles a bipolar transistor with its
base lead removed and replaced
with a light-sensitive area.

6.) Unijunction transistors

- are three-lead transistors that act
exclusively as electrically controlled
switches; they are not used as
amplifiers.
