REGION 1: ILOCOS REGION
• Its literature is known as one of the
most colorful regional Filipino
literatures.
• Prior to Spanish Colonial Period,
the Ilocano literature is purely
alive in form of written and oral
literature. Ancient poets
expressed themselves through
folk and war song.

PEDRO BUCANEG
(BUKANEG)
• March 1592 died circa 1630
• Acknowledged of the epic “Biag ni
Lam-ang”. He considered as the father
of the Ilocano literature.
• Bucaneg was a foundling, who shortly
after his birth already floating in a
basket between Bantay and Vigan was
found an old woman.
• Brought to Bantay Agustiner priest who
Baptist him as Pedro Bucaneg (Bukaneg).
• Bucaneg was blind since birth but he was
grew up a smart and talented.
• Took lessons in Latin and Spanish and also
learned the Local language and Ilocano
Isneg.
• He know to translate prayers and sermons in local
language
• Although bucaneg was he dictated the text of his
poems songs and translations as someone wrote it
down.
• 1621, the Ilocano translation was printed in the
Augustinian convent in Manila.
• Arte de Lengua Iloca, this grammar book, co-
authored with Fr. Francisco Lopez.

LEONORA FLORENTINO (LEONA
JOSEFA FLORENTINO)
• April 19, 1849 – October 4, 1894
• Poet Ilocano and Spanish
• She is a Novelist, Political Writer, and
Journalist
• At the age of 10, she can write poems in
Ilocano and speak well in Spanish.
• She wasn’t allowed to study due to her
gender
• Fr. Francisco Abaya flourished her Spanish skill
and help her nice voice out her thoughts in poems.
• Married a politician Elias de los Reyes at the age of
14 together had 5 children.
• They lived alone in exile and separated family.
• She died at the age of 35.

REYES
• July 4, 1864 – October 10, 1938
• Also known as Don Belong
• Prominent Politician,Writer, Labor Activist.
• Originally founder of Aglipayan church
independent Christian Protestant church in
the catholic tradition.
• Due to his anti catholic writing he there
forgot the meaning
• Pope Leo XIII formally excommunicated, Reyes in
1903 as an apostate.
• He followed his mother’s footsteps by initially
turning to writing as a career.
• Won an award at the age of 23 his first written
book
• Become a journalist , editor, publisher in Manila
• Imprisoned in 1897 for revolutionary activities
• Deported in Spain jailed until 1898
• He got influences by writing of European
socialist and Marxists.
• Returning to Philippines in 1901 founded
the first Labor Union in the Country
• Also active seeking Independence from
the US
• After serving the Philippines in the 1920s
settled into private life and religious
writings
• Have 27 children and 3 successive wives

CARLOS BULOSAN
• November 24, 1913 – September 11, 1956
• Born to Ilocano parents in the Philippine in
Binalonan, Pangasinan
• Most of his youth was spent in the country side as
a farmer.
• His hometown is the starting point of his famous
semi-autobiographical novel “America is in the
Hearth”
• Left from America on July 22, 1930 at the age of 17.
• Upon arriving in Seattle, he met with someone and was
forced to work in a low paying job
• He worked as a farm worker, harvesting grapes and
asparagus, and doing other types of hard work in the
fields of California.
• He also worked as a dishwasher with his brother in the
famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo

• December 3, 1924
• Born in Rosales, Pangasinan the setting of
his many stories
• Ilocano descent whose family had migrated
to Pangasinan to flee from poverty
• His influences: his mother and Jose Rizal

yet understand in his own country

• Born in Bacolor, Pampanga
• Exquisite in Crisostan (Balagtasan)
in Pampangas local dialect.
• A poet, Play Wright and editor
• Wrote Moro-Moro and Sarsuela

• Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare
• Sigalot – considered the best and written in jail
• Wrote an English – Spanish – Pampanga dictionary with
Modesto Joaquin
ANGELA MARIE MANALANG
• August 24, 1907 died in 1995 at the age of 88
• Born in Guagua, Pampanga
• Settled in Bicol Region in Albay
• During her Senior Year, she moved to St.
Scholastic’s College in Malate, Manila where
her writing started to get noticed
• Was among the first General Female student
of the UP.
• Was the author of Revolt from Hyemen, a poem
protesting against material rape which caused her
denial by an all-male jury from winning the
Philippines Commonwealth Literary Awards in 1940
• Poems, a poem collection published 1940 and was
revised in 1950
