DR.S . JAYANTHI
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
INTRODUCTION
• One of the industrial wastes of serious consequence
from the point of pollution is the waste water from
distillery.
• The wastewater has high organic and inorganic
matter.
• The treatment is done by anaerobic digestion, which
is an excellent method of reducing about 90 % of
BOD and recovery of methane having about 60-65%
methane.
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
• An anaerobic sequential batch process carried out in a
single vessel.
• The biological reactions occur under anaerobic
conditions and the vessel is operated on a fill and
draw basis in a sequential method.
• The anaerobic sequencing batch reactor is applicable
for the conversion of a wide variety of organic waste
waters to methane and carbon-di oxide through the
action of mixed micro organisms..
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
The operation takes place in four cyclic steps:
Feed,
Reaction,
Settling and
Discharge
The experimental apparatus consists of a bioreactor
with a working capacity of 5L (includes the volume
of wastewater and of biomass) and with arrangements
for mixing the contents
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
A simplified model will be developed considering the
anaerobic bacterial metabolism as a consecutive first order
model that consists of two steps:
conversion of soluble substrate into total volatile
acids i.e. Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis and acetogenesis and
the conversion of this compound into methane i.e.
aceticlastic methanogenesis

ADVANTAGES
Good removal ability of the biodegradable substrates
High production of biogas
Low running cost
Operational simplicity
Efficient quality control of the effluent
Flexibility of use in a wide variety of wastewaters to be treated
OBJECTIVES
The aim of the work is to determine the basis for the
design of an Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor
(ASBR) operated in mesophilic conditions for the
treatment of waste water.
To enhance the performance of Anaerobic
Sequencing Batch Reactor (ASBR) for distillery
wastewaters and for the production of maximum
yield of methane gas .
METHODOLOGY
PHASE I
Collection of high strength wastewaters (Distillery waste water)
Analysing the characteristics of wastewaters
Treating the wastewaters in ASBR
Varying the operational parameters to enhance the performance
of ASBR.
