Bio-Degradability and Methane Potential of Distillery Waste Water by Anaerobic Sequential Batch Reactor

The document discusses using an anaerobic sequential batch reactor (ASBR) to treat distillery wastewater. It describes the ASBR process as occurring in four cyclic steps - feed, reaction, settling, and discharge. The objectives are to determine design parameters for an ASBR treating distillery wastewater under mesophilic conditions and to maximize methane gas production. The methodology involves collecting distillery wastewater, analyzing its characteristics, treating it in an ASBR, and varying operational parameters to improve performance.

BIO-DEGRADABILITY AND METHANE POTENTIAL OF

DISTILLERY WASTE WATER BY ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL

BATCH REACTOR

M.AJONA
ME II YEAR
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF

DR.S . JAYANTHI
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
INTRODUCTION
• One of the industrial wastes of serious consequence
from the point of pollution is the waste water from
distillery.
• The wastewater has high organic and inorganic
matter.
• The treatment is done by anaerobic digestion, which
is an excellent method of reducing about 90 % of
BOD and recovery of methane having about 60-65%
methane.
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
• An anaerobic sequential batch process carried out in a
single vessel.
• The biological reactions occur under anaerobic
conditions and the vessel is operated on a fill and
draw basis in a sequential method.
• The anaerobic sequencing batch reactor is applicable
for the conversion of a wide variety of organic waste
waters to methane and carbon-di oxide through the
action of mixed micro organisms..
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
The operation takes place in four cyclic steps:
Feed,
Reaction,
Settling and
Discharge
The experimental apparatus consists of a bioreactor
with a working capacity of 5L (includes the volume
of wastewater and of biomass) and with arrangements
for mixing the contents
ANAEROBIC SEQUENTIAL BATCH
REACTOR
A simplified model will be developed considering the
anaerobic bacterial metabolism as a consecutive first order
model that consists of two steps:
conversion of soluble substrate into total volatile
acids i.e. Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis and acetogenesis and
the conversion of this compound into methane i.e.
aceticlastic methanogenesis

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the work is to determine the basis for the

design of an Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor
