VARIABLES IN SCIENTIFIC
INVESTIGATION

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
Objectives
1.Determine prior knowledge of students on
scientific investigation through inquiry-
based learning
2.Deepen understanding of scientific
investigation skills through varied hands-
on and minds-on activities using
differentiated instruction
3. Create a simple problem where scientific
variables can be identified. Use localized
materials or examples.

What are we changing in
the experiment?

What are we testing?

What is staying the same?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
Each question (Q1-Q3) refers to
an experimental variable.
• Which is the dependent
variable?
• the independent variable? and
• the controlled variable?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
Why is it important to make an
experiment repeatable?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
What did you feel while doing
the activity?

ACTIVITY # 2
MIX, DRY or CON?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
Group Activity:
Identify which is the dependent, independent and controlled
variable. See Annex 2 Activity Sheet
Group 1 will test where a medicine tablet will dissolve
faster, in tap or warm water.
Group 2 will experiment on which will melt faster, dark or
white chocolate.
Group 3 will identify where a 25 centavo coin will quickly
clean, in softdrink or in vinegar.
Group 4 will determine which will float in water, a cotton or a
dishwashing foam.
Group 5 will prove which will clean a greasy cloth faster,
bath soap or laundry soap.

Q2. What did you feel while
doing the activity?

Create a simple problem using localized
materials or examples where students
will be able to identify the three
scientific variables.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MATTER
Will a baby rabbit grow bigger when fed with feeds or
Fresh Vegetables?
Two rabbits, ideally from the same litter will be used to conduct
the experiment. Give each rabbit a different diet: one of only
fresh vegetables such as lettuce, carrots and celery; feed the
other rabbit feeds from the pet store. Make sure the weight of
the food each rabbit receives is the same. Record your
observation after every week.
The controlled variable is the weight of the food the rabbits receive.
The independent variable is the kind of food the rabbits receive. (feeds vs.
fresh vegetables)
The dependent variable is the height, weight and length of the rabbits
each week.
