Maslow’s
Hierarchy
of Needs
Existence needs is the lowest level needs and are concerned
with the physical survival needs such as food, water,
shelter, and physical safety.

Relatedness needs is the satisfaction of emotional support,


respect, recognition, and a sense of belonging through
interaction with other people.

Growth needs is the personal growth and development


that can be satisfied by using one’s capabilities to
the fullest.
THE MOTIVATOR- HYGIENE
THEORY OF MOTIVATION AND
JOB SATISFACTION
The premise of motivator-
hygiene theory is that lower level
needs have generally been
satisfied in the society. But the
truth is the fulfilment of the lower
level needs does not give job
satisfaction.
MOTIVATOR- HYGIENE THEORY
• proposed by Frederick Herzberg in 1959
• categorize the needs into two sets
1. Motivator
2. Hygiene
JOB ENRICHMENT
Job enrichment is redesigning the job to
maximize the motivator factors
because of so much satisfaction and
motivation derived from the nature of
work.
Herzberg ways of enriching the job
• Remove some of the controls over employee and increase their
personal accountability and responsibility for their own work.

• Provide employees with complete and natural units of work where possible. For
example, instead of having them make one component of
a unit, let them produce a unit.

• Give employees additional authority and freedom in their work.


• Provide reports on production on a regular basis directly to the
workers instead of to the superiors.

• Encourage workers to take on a new and difficult task.

• Assign highly specialized tasks so that workers can become expert


in a particular task or operation.

OF WORK MOTIVATION
JOB- CHARACTERISTICS THEORY

• developed by two psychologists, J. Richard Hackman and


G. R. Oldham
• suggested that certain job characteristics influenced both
behaviour and attitudes of work
• but these attitudes did not affect all the workers in the
same way

• Thus, specific job characteristics lead to a psychological


condition, which in turn, lead to increased motivation,
performance, and job satisfaction if one’s need for
growth is strong to begin with.
FIVE CORE DIMENSIONS OF JOB
1. Skill Variety – the number and
variety of skills and abilities
needed for a job
2. Task Identity – the unity of the job
3. Task Significance – the importance of
the job to the lives and well-
being of others
4. Autonomy – the amount of
independence an employee has
in scheduling and organizing
work
5. Feedback – the information received
by the employee about their
performance

1. Combining Tasks

2. Forming Natural Work Units

3. Establishing Client Relationship

4. Vertical Loading

5. Opening Feedback Channels


SIMILARITIES
among need- achievement, needs- hierarchy, ERG, motivator- hygiene, and job characteristics

1. All focus on the importance of the work itself and the


challenges, growth opportunities, and responsibilities provided
for the workers.
2. All theories are concerned with what might be called content of
motivation, the specific needs that arouse and guide behaviour.
