Motivational and

Educational Leadership
Leadership Role and Task
Requirements
LEADERSHIP
 Is the art of motivating a group of people
to act towards a common goal.
 Captures the essentials of being able to
inspire others and being prepared to do so.
All educators take leadership roles. Teachers
are the leaders of their classrooms. Principals
are leaders in their schools. Every educator
and administrator plays in leading
tomorrow’s future.

LEADERSHIP
TASK/REQUIREMENTSROLES

oneself and should have confidence.

2. EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION SKILLS

-You can’t lead a group of people if you
don’t speak with others. The best
educational leaders are excellent
communicators and know how to reach a
variety of people in many different ways.
3. RESOURCEFUL
-To be an effective leader, you need to be
resourceful and open to new ideas.
Especially during tough economic times.

4. LEAD BY EXAMPLE
-The best leaders in the educational system
make it a point to lead by example, not
simply by words.
5. POWER OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
-The most important trait of being an
educational leader is believing in your student
and the power of education. If you don’t believe
your students or your colleagues, then everyone
is doomed for failure. It’s vital to believe in
what your school is trying to accomplish each
and every day, and to convey your enthusiasm
for change, your own motivation to make
things better. Your words and action directly
impact morale-show others your passion for
education, and they’ll feel it too.
LEADERSHIP STYLES

 A leader’s way of providing direction,

implementing plans, and motivating
people. Different situations however,
call for different leadership styles.
1. HIERARCHICAL STYLE
 Based on the traditional method of
education, emphasis in a top-down
approach with formal authority and little
scope for participatory analysis.
 Administrative head, the principal, carries
out all duties of a; planner, supervisor,
analyst, resource allocator.
 A very straightforward, with major
emphasis on efficiency, control and
routines.
2. TRANSFORMATIONAL STYLE
 Based on working together to put in place
a mechanism that will win immediate
benefits and future ones. This leadership
style opens the door wide for intellectual
excitement, motivation through values and
a shared vision by participation in
leadership activities.
 Fosters a sense of purpose and meaning to
unite people for a better cause.
3. FACILITATIVE STYLE
 Similar to transformational styles, but
more democratic as well as interactive in
practice.
 Works with the entire management,
offering partnership in preparing for the
future, promoting collective ideas by
being a part of the crowd, rather than
being at the center.
 Empowering the entire educational system
is the primary goal.
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
1. GREAT MAN THEORY
 According to the Great Man Theory-
leaders are born with just the right traits
and abilities for leading-charisma,
intellect, confidence, communication
skills, and social skills.
 The theory suggest that the ability to lead
is inherent-that the best leaders are born,
not made.
2. TRAIT THEORY
 Scholars researching the trait theory try to
identify leadership characteristics from
different perspectives. They focus on the
physiological attributes such as
appearance, weight, and height;
demographics such as age, education, and
familial background; and intelligence,
which compasses decisiveness, judgment,
and knowledge.
3. CONTINGENCY THEORY
 Emphasizes different variables in a
specific setting that determine the style of
leadership best suited for the said
situation. It is founded on the principle
that no leadership style is applicable to all
situations.
 Hodgson White-leadership researcher
believe that the best form of leadership is
one finds a perfect balance between
behaviors, needs, and context.
4. SITUATIONAL THEORY
 That leadership depends on the situation at
hand. Put simply, leaders should always
corresponds their leadership to the
respective situation by assessing certain
variables such as the type of task, nature
of follower and more.
5. BEHAVIORAL THEORY
 The focus is on the specific behaviors and
actions of leaders rather than their traits or
characteristics. The theory suggest that
effective leadership is the result of many
learned skills.
