Formulation and Evaluation of Semisynthetic Shampoo

This document summarizes the formulation and evaluation of a semi-synthetic shampoo. It discusses introducing herbal remedies like garlic, amla fruit, neem leaves, and tulsi leaves into shampoo through extraction processes to create a safer alternative to chemical shampoos. The formulated shampoos were found to be safer than chemical conditioners by reducing protein loss and maintaining the scalp's acidic pH of 5.5 without using synthetic preservatives. The objective was to create an herbal shampoo using an eco-friendly process with functional properties and therapeutic compounds from plants.

INTRODUCTION:
 A Shampoo can be defined “as a preparation of a
surfactant in suitable form–(liquid, solid or
powder), which when used under the conditions
specified will remove surface grease, dirt and
skin debris from the hair shaft and scalp without
affecting adversely the hair, scalp of health of the
user”.
CATEGORIES OF SHAMPOO:
 Clarifying shampoo
 Everyday shampoo

 Volumizing shampoo

 Oily hair shampoo

 Normal hair shampoo

 Dry, damaged hair shampoo

 Colored hair shampoo

 2-In-1 Shampoo

 Medicated shampoo

 Swimmer’s shampoo
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
 The objective of this project is to formulate and
evaluate an herbal or semi-synthetic formulation
having functional properties and therapeutic
compounds using herbal remedies, eco-friendly
manufacturing process.
PLAN OF WORK
 Collection of Plant Materials
 Formulation

 Evaluation

 Completion of Data

 Presentation of Project
FLOW CHART OF FORMULATION
OF SEMI-SYNTHETIC SHAMPOO:
 Selection of herbs and herbal remedies
* Garlic & Amla Fruit
* Neem Leaves & Thulsi Leaves
 Dried the herbs in sunlight

 Phytochemical study of herbs

 Extraction of the herbs by various extraction

processes
* Maceration Process
* Simple Extraction
 Preparation of Semi-synthetic Shampoo by using
mortar & pestle
CONCLUSION
 The formulated shampoos were not only safer
than the chemical conditioning agents, but also
greatly reduce the protein loss during combing.
The pH of the shampoos was adjusted to 5.5, to
retain the acidic mantle of scalp. Synthetic
preservatives have sometimes been the cause of
adverse effects among consumers. We have used
the physicochemical approach to preservation
and by formulating a self preserving shampoo,
have avoided this risk posed by chemical
preservatives.
