Excretory System of Bony Fishes

The excretory system of bony fishes consists of two elongated kidneys that filter waste from the blood and break down nitrates and ammonia into urea using energy. The kidneys are connected to a small urinary bladder and urogenital papilla by two short mesonephric ducts. Freshwater fish produce large volumes of urine and reabsorb salts in the distal tubules, while marine fish lack distal tubules, have smaller glomeruli, and can adjust their urine output.
