•A clause is a group of
words that contains a
subject and a verb.

Independent Clause (MAIN CLAUSE)
Three components:
• Subject - a person or thing that is being discussed or
described.
• Verb or predicate - They tell the reader what the
subject is doing. It talks about the subjects.
• They express a complete thought - something
happened or was said.
Independent Clause (MAIN CLAUSE)

He dreamed of living in the forest

Why?
•It depends on another
group of words to express
a complete thought .
•Dependent Clauses often begin with
words like if, whether, since, when, etc.
These are called subordinating
conjunctions.

•Who: Refers to a person
•Whom: Refers to a person (as the verb’s
