Objectives:
The learners is able to use appropriate kinds
of research in making decisions.
To be able to fully understand research and;
Know the importance of research in daily life.
Research experiences and
knowledge
Ms. Denielle Valencia Mr. Francis Ordeniza
Research, as stated by Shuttleworth and
Wilson (2008), in a scientific context, refers to
the scientific method from start to finish.
It is the collection and evaluation of
information about a subject. Its purpose is to
answer questions and to generate new knowledge
(Nordquist, 2019).
As Chan (2017) states, there are 3 things
that makes up research, to guide and
to teach the researchers to succeed.
These are: Characteristics, Processes and ethics
According to Kumar (n.d.), there are 8
characteristics of research: reliability, validity, accuracy,
credibility, generalization, empirical, systematic and
controlled.
Each characteristic defines or describes research,
characteristics of it that are needed
to be achieved to gain credibility.
“Reliability is the repeatability of any research,
research instrument and procedure. If any research
contains similar results, each time it is
tackled with similar procedures, it is called
to be a reliable research.” (Kumar, n.d.)
Professor Levine (2019) states that there
are 16 research ethics:
1. Honesty 5. Openness
2. Objectivity 6. Respect for intellectual
3. Integrity property
4. Carefulness 7. Confidentiality
8. Responsible publication 13. Competence
9. Responsible monitoring 14. Legality
10. Respect for colleagues 15. Animal care
11. Social responsibility 16. Human subjects
12. Non-discrimination protection
And lastly, it’s process or methodology is
broken down to 7 steps, according to Garg
(2012).
1. Find the problem.
2. Get background information regarding your
problem.
3. Formulating your hypothesis
4. Prepare research design
5. The gathering of data
6. Analysis of data
7. To report the findings of the research.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Promotes Cognitive Development
Evidence from Kardash (2000), Ishiyama (2002),
Bauer and Bennett (2003), Lopatto (2003, 2004,
2006), and Hunter, Laursen, and Seymour (2006)
suggests that undergraduate research
experiences can promote cognitive development.
In an undergraduate research
experience students can progress
through each of Bloom's (1956) six
stages of cognitive learning:
Knowledge
Comprehension
Application
Analysis
Systhesis
Evaluation
PROMOTES THE AFFECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT
Undergraduate research promotes the
Affective Learning domain. (Bloom, 1965).
2 reasons to care about the affective
domain:
students to place what they learn in the
greater context of their lives and
decision-making
we want to foster these skills to develop
more responsive learners in our
classrooms.
DEVELOPS SENSE OF SELF
Research enable us:
To be mentored by teachers
Collaboration with other students
Interact with the partakers.
research student participants report all of
these gains, as well as a stronger sense of
their career and graduate school plans
(see Bauer and Bennett, 2003; Seymour,
Hunter, Laursen, and DeAntoni, 2003;
Lopatto, 2003, 2004, 2006; and Hunter,
Laursen, and Seymour, 2006).
RESEARCH BENEFITS MORE THAT
STUDENTS
Postsecondary institutions and the community
can benefit as well. Undergraduate research
improves student retention (Nagda, et al. ,
1998), and community-based and campus-
based research can produce outcomes that
influence leaders' decision-making (Paul, 2006).

Importance of Research in Daily Life
• Leann Zarah (2019) states that the main purpose
of research is to inform action,
to prove a theory and contribute to
developing knowledge in a field or study.
Role of research according to
Zarah (2019)
It is an inquiry process
It is a formal process of problem
solving
It is a set procedures and stages
It originates with a question or a
problem
It is an iterative process
Signifance of the Research
To gather necessary information
To improve standard of living
To know the truth
Research can be defined as a systematic
investigation that is designed to develop or
give knowledge. (Jin,2014)
Research is the best and reliable way
to understand and act on the issues
which we are currently facing.
(University of Surrey, 2016)
Research and Society
Research is useful for future endeavors.
Research hones basic life skills and
makes learning a lifelong endeavor.
Research affect society and the lives of
each one.
Research is considered as a catalyst for
solving complex problems. It has played an
important role in our lives. It’s a
process of investigation where you examine an
object from different points of view.
(University of Surrey, 2016).
It has been the best, reliable way
to understand the given subject and has
helped a lot of people at some
point. Although research is a difficult task,
its results serves as references for future
researches similar to the study.
(Kapur, R., 2019)
Research is concerned with the increasing understanding
since it provides us with knowledge to
identify future problems, as well as finding
its causes. The data received from the
research gives serves as a head start
on various topics. (Importance of Research, n.d.)
