Introduction
Building Automation System (BAS)
• A computerized, intelligent network of electronic devices
designed to monitor and control the mechanical, electronic, and
lighting systems in a building
• A fully-integrated control system in which building services are
monitored and controlled by a computer-based management
system
• The objectives of building automation are improved occupant
comfort, efficient operation of building systems, and reduction in
energy consumption and operating costs.

Why BAS?
• Keeps the building climate within a specified range
• Provides lighting based on an occupancy schedule
• Monitors system performance and device failures
• Provides malfunction alarms (via email and/or text notifications) to
building engineering/maintenance staff
• Reduces building energy and maintenance costs when compared to
a non-controlled building.
• A building controlled by a BAS is often referred to as an intelligent
building or a smart home.

Functional Aspects of BAS
BERILMU BERTEKNOLOGI BERINOVASI
Bus System
• Bus System can be used to control lighting and other electrical systems and
products automatically
• Can also be interfaced to a home security system or other electrical items
• Available in a wired version and a wireless version
• The wired Bus system uses a standard category 5 UTP (Unshielded Twisted
Pair) cable as its network communications cable
• The maximum length of cable used on a C-Bus network is 1000 metres
• The maximum number of C-Bus networks in one installation is
255
BERILMU BERTEKNOLOGI BERINOVASI
Bus System
• Each standard C-Bus unit requires 18mA @ 15-36Vdc to operate, however
some C-Bus units require up to 40mA.
• Each C-Bus network requires at least one system clock generating unit for
data synchronization

KNX System
Introduction
• In May 1999 members of the following associations founded KNX
Association cvba:
• EIBA ( European Installation Bus Association)
• EHSA (European Home Systems Association)
• BCI (BatiBUS Club International)
• In 1999 this association merged with 2 European association.
• BCI (France) promoting the Batibus System
• European Home System Association (Netherland) promoting the ESH
system.

KNX Goals
• Definition of a new truly open standard KNX™ for intelligent homes and
building
• Establishing the KNX Trademark as a token for quality and multi-vendor
interworking
• Establishing KNX as a European and worldwide standard.

KNX – Wiring System
BERILMU BERTEKNOLOGI BERINOVASI
KNX Technology
• Most widely used medium ‘Twisted Pair’
• Advantages compare to conventional installation:
• Reduced amount of cable
• Increase the number of system function
• Improve the transparency of the installation
• This control cable:
• Connect load and switching
• Supplies power to the bus devices
