 Housekeeping is the provision of a clean,
comfortable, safe and aesthetically appealing
environment.

IMPORTANCE OF HOUSEKEEPING
 Housekeeping is often perceived as a tedious job but
one feels comfortable only in the environment which
is clean and well ordered, so cleanliness is important
for the health of persons.
 Cleaning is carried out for the following reasons;
 - Aesthetic appeal - Hygiene Maintenance - Safety
 To maintain reputation of hospital
 To meet the expectations of the patients and community
as a whole
 To create a clean, safe, comfortable, aesthetic and
hygienic environment

LAUNDRY SERVICES
Hospital laundry is the space or area that receives all the
linen material from different areas like ward, OT, OPD,
and office area where they undergo process of sorting,
washing , extracting, drying, ironing, folding, mending
and delivery.
 OBJECTIVE OF LAUNDRY SERVICES
 To provide comfortable and pleasant environment to
patient and visitors of hospital by supplying clean linen.
 To control Hospital Infection (3-4% of HAI is due to
mishandling of the infected linen)
 To supply uninterrupted supply of linen to user
department.
ACTIVITIES IN LAUNDRY
 Collecting and receiving dirty and soiled linen from
wards and other dept.
 Sorting of linen
 Removing of infected linen (Hypochloride 1%)
normal washing
 Temp 65°C for 10 minutes
 Sterilization (CSSD)
 Washing and Drying
 Repairing/ sewing
 Pressing and folding
IMPORTANCE
 An effective laundry service in a hospital has the
following advantages:
 Provides psychological satisfaction to the patients and
improves the aesthetics.
 Efficient laundry service reflects a positive image of the
hospital and is an important public relations variable.
 It reduces the incidence of Hospital Associated
Infection(HAI) by preventing infected laundry from
becoming a source of infection.
 It facilitates provision of quality healthcare services.
