VALUE THEOREMS
INTERMEDIATE VALUE THEOREM
Intermediate Value Theorem (IVT)
If a function 𝑓(𝑥) is continuous over a closed
interval [𝑎, 𝑏], then for every value 𝑚 between
𝑓(𝑎) and 𝑓(𝑏), there is a value 𝑐 ∈ [𝑎, 𝑏] such
that 𝑓(𝑐) = 𝑚.
𝒚 𝒇(𝒙)
𝒇(𝒃)
Observe that for any value
we assign 𝑚 in between 𝑓(𝑎) 𝒎
𝑷
and 𝑓(𝑏) , the consequent
position of the red dot 𝒇(𝒂)
assigns a corresponding
value of 𝑐 between 𝑎 and 𝑏.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
Let 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 − 3 continuous over [2, 6] .
What value of 𝑐 will satisfy the IVT given
that 𝑚 = 5?
The graph of 𝑓 𝑥 =
2𝑥 + 1 shows that
the extrema of the
function (maximum
& minimum values)
occur at the
endpoints of the
interval [1, 4].
min value ⇒
Observe that
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 on
[−1, 4] has a
maximum value
at one endpoint
and a minimum
value at an
interior point.
Solution:
The exponential function 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥−1 on [−1, 3]
exhibits the extrema at the endpoints of the
interval. The minimum occurs at 𝑥 = −1 & the
𝟏
minimum value is 𝑓 −1 = (2)−1−1

The maximum occurs at 𝑥 = 3 and the
maximum value is 𝑓 3 = (2)3−1 = 22 = 𝟒.

𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟐𝒙−𝟏
The extreme
values of 𝑓 are max value ⇒
𝟏
and 𝟒 on the
𝟒
interval [−1, 3].
Maximum

Consider the function 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 4 − 8𝑥 2 .
Find its extrema on each given interval.
1. [−2, − 2] 3. [−1.5, 1]
