Syllabus

Introduction
 Design is a decision-making process (often iterative), in
which the engineering sciences and mathematics are
applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated
objective.

 Transmission systems transfer mechanical power from a


source to another machine components. ... If we consider a
lathe, power from motor is provided to a chuck through belt
drive and gearbox, these component are transmission elements.
A number of elements like gears in a gear box together form
a transmission system.

Flat - BELT
Flat Belts are one type of flexible connectors for transmitting power from one
pulley to another pulley. Whose centre distance is approx. 5-15m.

• Determine drive requirements. How much power need to transmit and at what
speed?

 Cross belt drive
 Quarter turn drive
 Belt drive with idler pulley

V- BELT
V- Belts are one type of flexible connectors for transmitting power from one pulley
to another pulley. Whose centre distance is approx. 3M.thier cross section is
trapezoidal. The belts are operated on groove pulleys.

Generally V belts are classified into various grades based on their power
transmitting capacity as A, B, C, D and E. the cross sectional areas are increased
order from A–E.

• A chain can be defined as a series of links connected by pin


joints.
• A mechanism in which power is transmitted from an
engine to the wheels of a vehicle or a boat's propeller by
means of a moving endless chain.

• Roller chain.
• Detachable chain.
• Pintle chain.
• Silent chain.
• Leaf chain.

• They are used in oil well drilling rigs

Advantages of chain drive
• They can be used for both long and short distances
• A number of shafts and be driven from a single chain
• They are compact and have small overall dimensions
• They do not present fire hazard
• Temperature and environmental conditions do not affect their working
• They do not require initial tension
• They have very high efficiency (up to 96%)
• They do not slip
• They are easier to install
• They can withstand abrasive conditions
• They can operate in wet conditions

Disadvantages of chain drives
• They can not be used where slip is the system requirement
• They require precise alignment compared to belt drives
• They require frequent lubrication
• They have less load capacity compared with gear drives
• Their operation is noisy and can cause vibrations
• They are not suitable for non-parallel shafts
• They can not be used where precise motion is required
• They require housing
• They require adjustments for slack like tensioning device

• Wire rope is several strands of metal wire twisted into
a helix forming a composite "rope", in a pattern known as
"laid rope". Larger diameter wire rope consists of multiple
strands of such laid rope in a pattern known as "cable laid".
