Alfredo S. Buenaventura was a Filipino composer born in 1929 who composed over 50 major works in various genres including operas, cantatas, symphonies, and concerti. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition and Conducting from Centro Escular University and his Doctor of Music Degree from Philippine Women's University. His compositional style incorporated both contemporary and conventional techniques with themes focused on Filipino folk music and tribal music. Some of his most notable major works include the operas Maria Makiling and Diego Silang, the cantatas Ang Ating Watawat and Pasko ng Barangay, and the symphonies Dakilang Lahi and Gomburza
