INTRODUCTION:

YANG GE DANCE OF NORTHEAST CHINA

CHINESE DANCE
 Chinese dance represents a vast and varied
assortment of traditional dance styles.
 Chinese Ethnic Dance generally refers to the dance
forms passed down among the many minority ethnic
groups within China.
 Chinese Folk Dance refers to the popular dance
styles passed down among the majority Han ethnicity,
like the Yang Ge, ribbon and fan dance.
 Chinese Folk Dance originate in the local folk
cultures of the majority Han ethnicity. The ways of
life deeply embedded into their dance styles.
 Both Chinese ethnic and folk dances are non-
systematic and highly improvise dance style rooted in
popular local traditions.
 Now most Chinese dance has developed the
systematic training system and technical skills.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUD – YANG GE
 Yang Ge, also called "Rice Sprout Song,“ or
“twisting Yang Ge dance”.
 A form of Chinese folk dance originating from
the Song Dynasty (960-1279)
 Popular in northern China

 One of the most representative folk arts with its


unique collective singing and dancing artform.

FUNCTION AND CHARACTERISTICS
 The Yang Ge dance originated from the labor
activities of rice seedlings transplant and farmland
plough, and is concerned with songs as the function to
worship god of farming to pray for harvest in ancient
times.
 By absorbing continuously techniques and forms from
farming songs, folk songs, folk Kungfu, acrobatics and
dramas during the development course, it has been
developed from an ordinary singing Yang Ge to a kind
of folk song and dance.
 The characters of Yang Ge dance sometimes bold and
vigorous, sometimes in pungent style, sometimes
smooth and happy, sometimes humor.
 Compact in rhythm.
 Jolly scene, abundant dance language, exuberant
gestures, and vivid performing style.
 In different areas Yang Ge is performed done in different
styles, but all express happiness.
 Examples of Yang Ge: "Drum Yang Ge dance" (Shandong),
"Shanbei Yang Ge dance", “Field Yang Ge dance" (Hebei,
Beijing and Liaoning), "Manchu Yang Ge dance" and “Stilt
Yang Ge dance", etc..
 Dance can accompany by famous Chinese story for example
Journey to the West, or in pure dance form (showcasing
dance technique, flirting and joke between young couple)
 Dance with props like waistdrum, dancing fan,
handkerchief , fake phoenix, and colored ribbon.
 People will organize Yang Ge dance matches and
performances spontaneously whenever there is a grand
festival.
 Combined with stilt trample (Caigaoqiao), dragon dance
(Wulong), lion dance (Wushi) and land boat dance (Pao
Hanchuan) in most grand festival-- vivid, skilled, beautiful
and bustling folk dance.
